Tottenham Break Single Game Booking Record; Hit With Automatic Fine

Tottenham transfer rumors

It was one of the ugliest scenes that any London Derby has seen in recent memory.

Tottenham Hotspur received nine bookings in their 2-2 draw with Chelsea last night. Those nine cards is the most any one team has received in a single match in Premier League history. That means Spurs will be hit with an automatic fine from the Football Association. Any team that receives six or more bookings during a single match gets charged and then hit with at least a £25,000 fine.

What an embarrassing, disgusting, awful way for Tottenham’s memorable season to head down the stretch.

It was a busy night for referee Mark Clattenburg, as Chelsea picked up three cards of their own.

(Update: Tottenham and Chelsea fans discuss the fight with the press)

Clattenburg, who was consulted this morning, said it is likely that both clubs will be charged with breaching the FA’s Rule E20 – rules surrounding “mass confrontation.”

Chelsea Interim Manager Guus Hiddink, who made some harshly condescending remarks about Tottenham before the game, was knocked down in a postgame melee that ensued near the tunnel. (See the video of the postgame fight here)

This wasn’t the only fracas in the match. Mousa Dembele eye-gouged Diego Costa. See the video of that incident over at this link.

Dembele, as well as Erik Lamela and Cesc Fabregas, could all face charges from the Football Association. These two sides obviously don’t like each other very much and the Tottenham versus Chelsea rivalry certainly reached a new, nasty level last night.
