Tottenham Hotspur Summer Transfer Window Grade: B

Tottenham Hotspur football club taught us that as long you get your deals done within the allotted window, it does not matter when they get closed. Spurs had a comatose window that awoke late, and once it did, ended up appearing somewhat impressive.

What’s most important, in the big picture, is that Chairman Daniel Levy put the hammer down on anyone that wants to leave and seek a fatter contract elsewhere. Spurs keep who they want to keep, and this summer was the best example of that.

You almost never see a current player absolutely eviscerate his club for lack of transfer business and credit Danny Rose for having the stones to do so. He later walked it back, because he had to, and despite the rumors, stayed put at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur Summer Transfer Window Major Additions: Defenders Davinson Sanchez, Serge Aurier and Juan Forth, Striker Fernando Llorente.

Despite all the baggage that Aurier brings to the table, if he doesn’t work out, Spurs added more players that also help provide them more cover in defense. In Llorente, they finally got that back up to Harry Kane that was long needed. As an added bonus, they spited their bitter rivals Chelsea in order to get him.

Tottenham Hotspur Summer Transfer Window Major Subtractions:

Selling Kyle Walker and Kevin Wimmer made a lot of sense (and dollars…or this case pounds), because they got a great price on each, and they could use the cash. The new White Hart Lane project means that THFC can’t be splashing the cash right like perhaps they would like to in an ideal situation. However, this window was about registering several “own goals.”

Mauricio Pochettino will be happy that he got to keep hold of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kane and even the rebellious Danny Rose.

In coming windows, keep an eye on Rose, as well as Toby Alderweireld. Both could be bolting for a place where they could get a raise, while Spurs will do all they can to keep them, and try to prohibit the label of “a selling club” being applied to them. Right now, they’re a holding club, and that’s not a bad place to be when you consider that they were the last team standing between Chelsea and the league title last year, and between Leicester City and their triumph in 2016. Congrats Spurs on achieving a “very late bloomer” summer transfer window.
