However, they’re still in sixth place in the league, a spot they have occupied since late October. Nevertheless, United have a chance for a so-called “plastic treble,” and winning in the EFL Cup on Sunday accomplishes the first component of that triad.
United have also reached the quarterfinals of the FA Cup and the last 16 of the Europa League.
The EFL Cup is the first English trophy of the season to be awarded and that will occur at the national stadium in London, Sunday February 26th. Southampton heads into Wembley having upset both Arsenal and Liverpool to make it to their first League Cup final since 1979 and just the second in their 132-year history.
