Manchester United slaughtered Championship side Reading 4-0 today in the third round of the FA Cup, with Wayne Rooney the main story line. The Captain of both United and the England National Team pulled level with Sir Bobby Charlton for the club record in goals scored. Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby are now equal with 249 goals scored in a United shirt.

“It is not the best day for him,” said United Manager Jose Mourinho in the postgame news conference.

“The best day will arrive. It is just a question of when.”

“It’s amazing. Everyone knows who Sir Bobby Charlton is and what he means for the history of the club and English football. For Rooney to be level is fantastic.”

Great team performance & a proud moment personally to equal @SirBobby's record. It's an honour to join him as @ManUtd's leading goalscorer ? pic.twitter.com/Rm769Gc52U

Coincidentally, the opponent for the big moment were led by a United man. Former Red Devils defender and current Royals Manager Jaap Stam added:

“Wayne has been a great player. He works very hard for the team. You saw that again.”

Congratulations to Wayne Rooney!
