There were reports this January transfer window that Manchester United contemplated an official bid for Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani, with sources telling ESPN FC that the Uruguayan striker was extremely keen on a move to Old Trafford.”
Manchester United certainly need goals and strikers, and perhaps Edinson Cavani is the guy. He’s one of the biggest names linked to the Red Devils this past winter, and L’Equipe reported on December 5th that Paris Saint Germain would indeed let him move to Old Trafford.
Provided they of course meet the sum of £32 million. That price tag should be no problem for Ed Woodward, he has the resources to “make it rain.”
The forward’s father, Luis, has told Israeli TV station Sport 5 that his son remains disenchanted at PSG and said: “I would like to see him playing for Real Madrid, Manchester United or Juventus.”
“I want him to win the Champions League, but he has to play for one of the few teams who can do so.
“You have to go to Barcelona, Real or Manchester, who invest in order to be European champions. It’s like with our national team — I always say that even our grandchildren won’t see them winning the World Cup.”
The Uruguay forward has been linked with moves to a couple places other than United; with Juventus being one of the bigger names. Cavani scored 18 goals and one assist in Ligue 1 play last season; six goals in 10 Champions League games.
He has continued his scoring prowess this season for the Ligue 1 leaders and rulers. You know Cavani can score, and scoring is something United desperately need, but will he be enough to enliven a dull, tedious very often dormant attack?
Also, where is the motivation for Paris to sell Cavani?
Even though he hasn’t been nearly as good in the French capital as he was at Napoli (he truly was an elite striker in Italy), they still need him. Right now he plays second banana to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but there always seems to be talk about Zlatan having an uncertain future. Ibra is 34, so he won’t be around forever.
Now imagine what the PSG attacking third would look like if both Cavanai and Ibrahimovic leave.
In order for United to get their money’s worth, they’d have to put Cavani in the final third, not running up and down on the wings like he has been doing. However, the main takeaway from this story- no matter how old you get, or much how much you accomplish, your parents never stop telling you what to do.
