Nothing is confirmed by the club or the representation of David de Gea yet, but the Manchester United online community is currently buzzing about a reportedly imminent contract extension for the goalkeeper.
According to The Sun, United’s world class number one is set for a bumper deal that will gave him a £350,000 a week salary, thus making him the second highest paid player currently on United’s roster, behind only Alexis Sanchez.
There has been some skepticism among United fans online about this report, mostly because of the media outlet from which it originated, but plenty of other publications have picked up on the De Gea story; which claims he’ll stay put in a Red Devils shirt for five more years.
NBC Sports, the Daily Mirror and Metro have all followed The Sun’s lead and published an article on the huge deal that is supposedly being finalized for the Spaniard.
De Gea is in the final year of his current contract, but there is an option for another year. His current deal was signed just weeks after his 2015 summer transfer to Real Madrid fell apart at the last minute on deadline day due to a clerical snafu in which both clubs blamed the other side.
De Gea is certainly one of the most elite goalkeepers in the world, and it is expected that his hometown club will come back with another approach to acquire him. This contract extension would of course stop that narrative from resurfacing.
