Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp attempted to reassure the supporters of his club that are feeling anxiety about the lack of summer transfer window activity thus far.
Liverpool Football Club broke their internal transfer fee record when they signed winger Mohamed Salah from AS Roma. They also signed Dominic Solake, who was out of contract at Chelsea. Beyond those two deals, it’s been a very very quiet summer at Anfield, with the Virgil van Dijk pursuit making a ton of headlines, but ending up a total disaster.
A week ago, Jurgen Klopp made public statements claiming that summer transfer work was getting done “behind the scenes.” He also said the club was being patient as they worked on hammering out transfer deals, and urged to supporters to also have patience.
After a 4-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in a preseason friendly, Klopp once again preached patience in his postgame news conference.
“If any fans of us think what the other teams are doing and why we don’t do anything, then I can’t help. We cannot buy players only because other teams buy players. We do business as good as we can do it,” Jurgen Klopp said.
“We are completely in it and we are convinced about the way we are doing it. Nervous fans, I don’t have to write a message for this. We have [until] the 31st of August. We have time and some things need time. If we make transfers, it’s because we want to do it. If not, then it’s because we don’t want to do it. That’s how it is and we have to wait a little bit.”
The topic of Van Dijk came up again, and Jurgen Klopp predictably dodged the line of questioning; as he should. The German did the right thing in avoiding commentary on that situation; nothing good can from discussing that.
“Am I allowed to talk about this? No I’m not. Pretty much everything what I could say would be a mistake, I think,” Klopp responded.
“You wrote everything about it a few weeks ago, I think. I was in Iceland when somebody told me this. That’s all I have to say about it.”
