Carli Lloyd, winner of both the Ballon d’Or (World Player of the Year) and Golden Ball (World Cup MVP) in 2015 battled injuries in 2016. She suffered a sprained MCL with the NWSL’s Houston Dash on April 23, but returned in time for the Summer Olympics in Rio. It appears 2017 will also see her playing overseas for a bit, as there is talk she is set to join Manchester City on loan.
U.S. women’s national team co-captain Carli Lloyd is set to join Manchester City, and her signing could be announced as soon as Wednesday, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.
Lloyd’s agreement with Manchester City, the reigning Football Association Women’s Super League (FAWSL) champion, would be a short-term contract that would allow her to return and play in the NWSL with the Houston Dash at the start of June.
Man City’s talks with Lloyd were first reported by Henry Winter of The Times.
Lloyd continues the trend of American stars playing overseas. Striker Crystal Dunn, formerly of the Washington Spirit, is off to Chelsea. Heather O’Reilly will ball for Arsenal and Alex Morgan has a short term deal with Lyon set up.
Carli Lloyd a devoted Liverpool fan, wants to play her club ball for the ladies team someday. Manchester City is not very far away though. When she gets to northwest England she’ll have to find an apartment with top notch pest control. Carli Lloyd is well known for her toughness, but certainly not when it comes to these little pests.
