Arsene Wenger Believes Aaron Ramsey Has the Upper Hand in Contract Talks

Two days ago Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey let it be known publicly that he will not be leaving the club in January. He also expressed his wishes to stay beyond the expiration of his contract, which happens in June.

The 27-year-old Welshman said he thought a deal on a new extension had already been reached, and he was thus surprised to learn that talks with the club had collapsed. Former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who stepped down in May, was the man in charge when the club signed Aaron Ramsey in 2008.

Wenger was asked if he would give Ramsey a new contract extension to which the Frenchman responded:

“We tried that before and it still can happen. I don’t really know what’s happening at Arsenal. Sure, Aaron Ramsey is in a strong position now and he will use this position, but I don’t know how far Arsenal will go in terms of giving him a huge contract.”

Wenger, who still hasn’t decided on his next job after managing Arsenal for over two decades, has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain this week, with reports a couple days ago indicating the Ligue 1 powerhouse want him to be their director of football.

Wenger admits he is out of the loop as to what is going on at his former club right now.

“These things were once my responsibility, but not anymore. I’m happy about that,” he added.
