The pants worn by Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars” are up for auction May 21st in Los Angeles. They are expected to fetch $70,000-$100,000.
“‘Star Wars’ is one of those rare cinematic experiences that most people remember their whole lives,” said Nate D. Sanders, whose company is auctioning the pants. “It’s hard to believe now, but ‘Star Wars’ in 1977 was not a ‘go’ from the start. Several studios passed on making it. But now, we look back on it, over 35 years later, and it’s the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time.”
The Skywalker pants, worn by Hamill for almost the entire film, are critical to the aura of Luke Skywalker –all white, because he’s good guy. Juxtaposed against his father, Darth Vader in all black. George Lucas was heavily influenced by the “spaghetti western” genre, where the color of a man’ denotes whether he’s good or bad. And since we’re writing a Star Wars piece, on the internet, that means GEEKS! So does SEO. And how many times do we hear about “black hat SEO” versus “white hat SEO?”
In an interview, Hamill even said of the Skywalker pants, “By the way, those pants I wore were just bleached Levi’s with the tag still in them.” They come with provenance from Christies and Sotheby’s.
