Wisconsin Badgers running back Corey Clement had the runner-up for Big Ten Media Day “quote of the day.” (The winner is Ohio State Linebacker Josh Perry with his metaphor for the OSU-Michigan rivalry) Clement was referencing the 2012 Big Ten title game when Wisconsin SLAUGHTERED Nebraska 70-31.
“You got an iPhone, and you got a flip phone, and you see all these great features the iPhone can do, and then you look at the flip phone, which phone are you going to go with? I’m going with the iPhone. That’s what I compared. Wisconsin is the iPhone, Nebraska is the flip phone.”
“I want to go to the Apple Store, I don’t want to go to the Sprint store right now.”
“Who wouldn’t want to go with what’s best at that moment?”
To be clear, Clement was only making the cellular phone analogy to describe the two programs at that time; as it helped to decided which direction he would go with his recruiting. Nebraska and Wisconsin were two of Clement’s final schools.
Later, a reporter asked him what it’s like to get the same exact Melvin Gordon questions over and over and over again this year (“What did you learn from Melvin?” “How does your running style compare to Melvin?” etc. etc.)
“It sucks,” he said jokingly.
“I’m tired of it, I can only be Corey Clement to the only extent possible. It’s great to be compared to him in the sense of ‘oh, you and Melvin were on the same team,’ but not statistical wise.”
Clement basically said you can’t really compare him to his predecessor are right now, given that his body of work is so much smaller. But at the end of the season, go right ahead.
“When my season’s over then you can do all the comparisons you guys want, but I can only be Corey Clement,” he said.
