Jake Peavy heads to DL, Big Blow to White Sox Hopes?

Prior to tonight’s rain-delayed game vs. the Los Angeles Angels, the Chicago White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list with a detached latissimus dorsi muscle in his right posterior shoulder and recalled right-hander Jeff Marquez from Class AAA Charlotte.

Ouch! Anything “detached” sounds like trouble, big trouble. And I have no clue what a latissimus dorsi is, but I’m assuming it’s the muscle you work when you do “lat pull-downs” at the gym.

We’re hearing 15 day DL now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Peavy gets shut down for the whole year at a later date, like last season.

By Paul M. Banks

Peavy, 29, suffered the injury in the second inning of last night’s 4-1 victory over the Angels.  He is 7-6 with a 4.63 ERA (55 ER/107.0 IP), 93 strikeouts and one shutout in 17 starts this season and has gone 3-2 with a 1.67 ERA (7 ER/37.2 IP), 31 strikeouts and 26 hits allowed over his last six starts.

Peavy is 10-6 with a 4.11 ERA (58 ER/127.0 IP) and 111 strikeouts in 20 starts with the White Sox since being acquired from San Diego on July 31, 2009 in exchange for four pitchers.  The 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner owns a career record of 102-74 with a 3.36 ERA (549 ER/1,469.2 IP).

If he is indeed shut down again this year then you might begin wondering what kind of shape he was in when the Sox acquired him from San Diego. Is this really the same Jake Peavy who the Cy Young in 2007? And given the way Clayton Richard is pitching for the Padres right now (6-4, 3.00 ERA, 87-42 K-BB ratio) you have to wonder who got the best of that deal.
