A very large contingent of the Manchester United fan base is currently in revolt as #GlazersOut has been a top trending term on Twitter today. For a decent amount of time, it was even the #1 trending term on the micro-blogging platform; worldwide.

So what’s the story behind the United supporter base backlashing against the Glazer family that owns the club?

? Number one trend worldwide #GlazersOut ???

FOX Sports Asia reports that:

“It started as response to a fan account asking everyone to tweet out #GlazersOut at 20:05 BST on June 19 – underscoring that it was in 2005 the Glazers took over the club.”

The revelation that the Glazers have only taken money out of the club, and not put any in, has sparked the supporter protest online, with social media the platform.

Utilizing the club’s original colors, green and gold, some MUFC supporters have made it known just how much they want the current regime removed.

All this crap that we're too scared to tweet #GlazersOut….We're a fan channel, our focus is the fans. And if tweet #GlazersOut makes the club and owners realise how pissed off they are then that can only be a good thing. Change is needed from them or someone new

What a delight to see so many powerful Manchester United fan accounts pushing #GlazersOut do not underestimate the power of Social Media. While United continues to generate huge revenue streams in their business, the results on the pitch have severely deteriorated. The club finished outside of the top four yet again this season, the fourth time since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.

Following another disappointing season that ended about a month ago, there has been a lot of talk about an aggressive overhaul this summer transfer window. However, not much transfer activity has actually taken place and training camp starts in just 10 days.

“Green and gold until they’re sold” is the rallying cry of the malcontent United supporters tweeting their disgust with what has happened to their beloved club. Here are some of the more noteworthy and interesting tweets with the #GlazersOut hash tag affixed.

Executive Vice President Ed Woodward, a figure who has a lot more power at the club than his respective counter-parts at other clubs, is a frequent target as well.

If to get Woodward gone or at least have less power and moved back to the pure buisness side we need to get the glazers out then I’m in. #GlazersOut pic.twitter.com/N2RpOOLRk7

Under investment
Patronizing of fans
Ruining traditions
Shambolic football planning
Broken promises
And a blatant lack of remorse to how the fans feel. The Glazers are ruining us. Right before our eyes. #GlazersOUT enough is enough.
Honestly. We are sad.. Past angry. Retweet! pic.twitter.com/1mxd8BJgDH
