Ten days ago Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed that the club was in talks to bring back striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic was the club’s leading scorer last season, but suffered a gruesome anterior cruciate ligament tear towards the tail end of United’s triumphant Europa League run.

His one year deal with United expired in June and the club decided not to extend it. Since then he has remained a free agent, but has conducted his rehabilitation activities at United’s facilities. Now, numerous outlets are reporting that United are closing on re-signing Zlatan.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mourinho: “has told executive vice chairman Ed Woodward that he wants the 35-year-old Swede back on the Old Trafford books. It is understood United have stepped up their work on the deal but the timing of the completion is still uncertain.”

M.E.N. goes on to say that United were set to re-up with Ibrahimovic as the end of his deal, but his knee injury, suffered in the Europa League quarter-final, put the kibosh on that. It is expected that an official announcement on the finalization of this deal will come soon. Ibrahimovic is expected to be able to play again by mid-season. He should return to match fitness in late calendar year 2017/early 2018.
