#13 TCU Horned Frogs: College Football 77 in 77

TCU_cheerleaders

You can’t call the TCU Horned Frogs Cinderella anymore. Not after a perfect 13-0 season which included a huge Rose Bowl win over the Wisconsin Badgers. Yes, they got screwed over by the BcS, and it sickens me that BcS commissioner Bill Hancock used their moment of triumph as a symbol/example of how he believes the status quo is supposedly just, during his nauseating speech to the FWAA the morning of the college football national title game.

Don’t get me wrong, I see how TCU got chances that other mid-majors did not; but it doesn’t mean the system work. TCU is more than just a cautionary tale; with seven seasons of ten+ wins, they have truly earned their place at the table.

Picks for Every Single College Football Bowl Game!

TCU_cheerleaders

TSB’s leading resident college football and college basketball nerds pick each and every game; often in very snarky fashion. DK=David Kay, PMB= Paul M. Banks

Dec. 18 New Mexico Bowl: BYU vs. UTEP, 2 p.m., ESPN

(DK) BYU.  The only bowl game in which neither team has a winning record.  What a way to start the bowl season!  I got the Mormons.

(PMB) BYU. It’s a good thing Brigham Young has about 20,000,000 descendants, because I can’t imagine anyone not related to him having even the most remote interest in this game. I’m picking the followers of Joseph Smith as well.

uDrove Humanitarian Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State, 5:30 p.m., ESPN
(DK) Northern Illinois.  Hey, I actually know something about Northern Illinois.  Their head coach left for Minnesota and they hired Wisconsin defensive coordinator Dave Doeren to be their new head man.  He is staying with the Badgers through the Rose Bowl though.  What does that mean for the actually game?  No idea.

(PMB) NIU. This is a very underrated game; and too good to be this early in the cycle. Huskies’ Chad Spann continues legacy of Northern Illinois rushers: Michael “the Burner” Turner, LeShon Johson, Garrett Wolfe etc.

R&L Carriers Bowl: Ohio vs. Troy, 9 p.m., ESPN
(DK) Ohio.  It’s the fourth best team from the MAC taking on a team from the Sun Belt Conference!  Ratings Monster!

(PMB) Ohio. Only because they had a mascot that stalks, plots and attacks other mascots in cold blood. As for the game- YAWN!

Dec. 21
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg: Southern Mississippi vs. Louisville, 8 p.m., ESPN

(DK) Southern Mississippi.  Brett Favre went to Southern Miss so obviously I am picking them.

(PMB) SMU. Reading the full name and match-up for this bowl game is the second most redneck thing I’ve ever done in my life. The first is spending last Christmas in a rural VA triple wide; with spotty cell phone service, no internet and three whole channels. Yes, you can’t pick your family. But you sure can pick (or more importantly not pick) your in-laws.

Rejoice TCU! You’re joining the Big East, and will soon have BCS Chances

TCU_cheerleaders

In a deal that’s great for both parties involved. TCU joined the Big East conference today. If you’ve watched ESPN College Football Gamenight this season, you’ve noticed their running gags “Big East Bound and Down” and the “ACC Wheel of Destiny” to make fun of how mediocre, or just plain the respective conferences are.

Although this move will not help the TCU Horned Frogs this season, when it comes to possibly getting into the BCS title game. At least in a couple of years, their chances of not getting screwed by the BCS will be a lot, lot smaller. Being in a power conference and playing a power conference schedule will make a huge difference. Because right now they’re not in a conference that brings anything to the table.

And this is great for the Big East, since they’re football is even worse than the ACC, which means it’s downright pathetic.

Complete Chaos: Just What the BCS Ordered!

boise state

It was a good college football Saturday for the mid-majors as Boise State and TCU both won handily.

The Hawaii Warriors were manhandled despite coming to the smurf turf with an impressive resume within the WAC. Bronco quarterback Kellen Moore hits receivers across the middle with Heisman-winning level precision.

Elsewhere, TCU’s victory over the Utah Utes was much more impressive considering that both teams were rated in the top five prior to the contest. This was the biggest sporting event in Salt Lake City since it hosted the Olympics.

Gary Patterson brought in his underappreciated squad and took care of business on the road. Both of these aforementioned games are evidence that margin of victory must be part of the equation for the BCS rankings.

Despite Routing #5 Utah, TCU Still Not Slotted for BCS Title Game

TCU_cheerleaders

Even though #3 and undefeated Texas Christian absolutely manhandled #5 (and previously undefeated) Utah on Saturday, it was still not enough for them to move up into a slot to play for the college football national title. (If the season ended today) In fact, they didn’t even move up at all, they remained at number three.

If you are a BCS proponent, you are truly running out of credibility (not like you really had much to begin with). There are four undefeated teams left in college football, two power conference teams: #1 Oregon and #2 Auburn, and two “mid-majors” #3 TCU and #4 Boise St.

In the latest rankings, the Big Ten first checks in at #7 Wisconsin Badgers, followed by #9 Ohio State Buckeyes, #11 Michigan State Spartans and #13 Iowa Hawkeyes. Throw in Nebraska next year at #8 and it looks like a really solid, top heavy conference even though there is absolutely no way a conference team plays for the title in 2010.
