USC Trojans vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Brutally Honest Game Preview

usc-song-girl

It’s not often that we pick a game with two unranked teams for BHGP. And other than September non-conference or bowl games, we don’t do the intersectional thing much either. But this is college football’s top inter-sectional rivalry: USC Trojans vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  Both are on the cusp of the AP top 25, so winner gets a national ranking.

USC has won 11 of the last 14. Notre Dame had an 11-game winning streak from 1983-1995.

This rivalry began in 1926, when Knute Rockne became the first Midwestern coach to take a team to the West Coast (Notre Dame won 13-12) and the teams have meet every season since (taking 1943-45 off due to travel restrictions during World War II).

Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh: Brutally Honest Game Preview

With three of their first four against ranked teams, Notre Dame had their “echoes woken up” on them right off the bat. But at least they had some desert last week in the form of rival Boston College. Having a 2-3 record after consuming the meat and potatoes of their schedule isn’t catastrophic. But now you can “shake down the thunder” because the cupcakes are coming! And with the remaining schedule, 7-5 in 2010 still seems very doable.

This week, they welcome Dave Wannstedt (a begrudgingly familiar site to Chicago Bears fans) and his 2-2 Pittsburgh Panthers to Notre Dame Stadium. Wanny has always been like a football version of a sitcom stock character. “Oh, that wacky neighbor Wanny! What hi-jinks and tomfoolery will ensue on this weekend’s episode?”

Well, if you want to learn more about Pitt and their players, start watching “America’s Most Wanted” because this team has more arrests than Rick James and Lindsay Lohan combined.

Notre Dame vs. Purdue: the Brutally Honest Game Preview

Basically, college football is to me what cocaine is to Paris Hilton- I go through withdrawal without it. Therefore, as the season begins (and that long offseason finally ends) I’m covering not one but two games this week. For preview one, Ohio State vs. Marshall go here.

Throughout the season, I’ll be bringing you these informative yet blunt game previews of every contest I cover; with a heavy focus on Northwestern, Illinois, Notre Dame, and the Big Ten in general.

From a national relevance standpoint, Virginia Tech vs. Boise St. is the game of the week, but from a fun-to-watch standpoint, I think Saturday’s shootout in South Bend, Notre Dame versus Purdue, is the winner hands down. Unless you’re really into punting, then the game will likely do nothing for you. This season opening battle between two “Crossroads of America” rivals will feature two dynamic spread-option offenses, minimal breaks between plays, and quite possibly 700+ combined passing yards.

If you have a Labor Day weekend cookout that might preclude from watching this game, skip it!
