urban-meyer

From the time  it was announced that Jim Tressel would be leaving Ohio State, one man had been on the minds of not just the Buckeye faithful, but all of the Big Ten:  Urban Meyer. SEC Football: Oversigning (“Cheating”)=More Championships

auburn_cam_newton

As Wes Bynum’s 19-yarder sailed through the desert air to split the uprights and down Oregon in the Tostitos BCS national championship there was no question Auburn was the best team in college football.  There was also no doubt which conference was at the top of the summit.  The cheers of “S-E-C” that rained down like ticker-tape on the Auburn players and coaches was evidence enough.  Fans chanting the conference’s moniker knew, and so did the rest of the nation, the SEC, with victories in the last five national championships, was college football’s king.

Fans, writers and even coaches have sought to explain this domination.  Many pegged blazing SEC speed as the reason, asserting that kids from Florida and Georgia just have better wheels than farm-boys from Ohio and Wisconsin.  For years, that reasoning has been widely accepted, but lately a new explanation has bubbled to the surface: oversigning.

D’eaux Tigers! Alabama Blanks LSU to Claim National Title

Ever since the rematch between Alabama and LSU was announced at the conclusion of the NCAA football season, there has been a heated debate as to whether or not these two teams deserved to face each other in New Orleans.

After all, Alabama lost at home to LSU, and they didn’t even play for their conference championship in December. In contrast, Oklahoma State won the Big 12 and only lost one game on the road.

Even with all of that animosity toward their presence in the game, Nick Saban and his Crimson Tide rolled into hostile territory in New Orleans and executed a defensive game plan that was one of the smartest ever displayed on this big of a stage. They held LSU to 92 total yards of offense, and only allowed the Tigers to cross the 50-yard line once en route to a 21-0 shutout victory to claim the school’s ninth national championship. AJ McCarron threw for 234 yards, and Trent Richardson rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

How Much Impact Will Bills #3 Overall Pick Marcell Dareus Have?

buffalo_bills

When the Buffalo Bills took 21-year-old defensive tackle Marcell Dareus out of Alabama third overall at the recent NFL draft, a lot of people actually thought they got the best player available. That might be true, considering Dareus should be able to step into the lineup on opening day and have an immediate positive impact on the team.

He might not be able to improve on the pass rush, but playing alongside steady nose tackle Kyle Williams should definitely improve the defense against the run, where they were horrible last season. The Bills weren’t too bad offensively, but they couldn’t keep the opposition from running all over them. He’s also quite versatile as he can play defensive tackle, nose tackle, and defensive end, and ran the 40 at the Combine in 4.92 seconds.

A Provoked Poke in the Ribs of SEC Pride

No group of college football fans, not even Texans, celebrate the sacred autumn rites of Saturday football at a higher volume than our brothers and sisters of the SEC. And the five national championships claimed by SEC football teams in the last decade have supplied their fans with more than enough ammunition to load up their gridiron boasts before they blindly lob them over state lines—a popular SEC pastime.
