Who’s to Blame For Columbus Blue Jackets Mess Part 2

cbj

When I wrote Part 1 of my 2-part article outlining the ills that plague the Columbus Blue Jackets, they possessed the worst record in the National Hockey League (NHL) with a record of 0-6-1.  Since Part 1 was written, the Blue Jackets have descended to even lower depths, with a record of 2-12-1.  While the Blue Jackets did win two games since that point, more recently they have been pummeled by their opponents by a cumulative score of 19-6 over their last three games.

The Blue Jackets are a team in disrepair.  They are a team with no identity, no direction and no grit, a fragile team who shows no signs of turning around the malaise, this for a team with the 5th highest payroll in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Blue Jackets to Have New GM and Coach in Place by Monday?

the sports bank

It’s being reported by multiple NHL sources, that Columbus Blue Jackets team President Mike Priest has contacted Ken Hitchcock about returning to coach the Jackets. Priest has also contacted former Calgary Flames General Manager (GM) Craig Button about assuming the reigns as the Blue Jackets GM.

For a team that’s off to a woeful 1-9-1 record, particularly ironic when you consider they have the NHL’s 4th highest payroll (Let’s not forget they have the NHL’s 4th worst home attendance mark), something has to be done and done quickly.

Blackhawks Extend GM Stan Bowman 3 Years, I’m Still Not Sold

stan_bowman

When Stan Bowman assumed the position of Chicago Blackhawks GM in July 2009, it came at a time when the Hawks brass were looking for any excuse at all to jettison then incumbent Dale Tallon. The first day of free agency contract mailing snafus served as the perfect “reason.”

Stan’s been John McDonough and Rocky Wirtz’s “boy” ever since they took over in 2008. Dale Tallon (who actually built the Stanley Cup winning team) was specifically kicked to the curb so Stan would have the job handed to him. Might have a little something to do with the Hawks hiring of Stan’s dad, Scotty, as a hockey consultant.

You see when your dad is the most successful hockey coach of all time, Scotty Bowman, your ticket up the ladder has been punched. It’s easy to become the youngest GM in NHL history when you grow up with connections like that.

Longtime Dallas Stars, Minnesota Legend Mike Modano Retires

mike modano north stars

The NHL will start its regular season this weekend without Mike Modano. Modano, a star forward played 21 (yes 21 seasons) for the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars franchise.

He leaves the game as the highest-scoring American born player in history with a total of 1,374 points in 1,499 season games (561 goals, 813 assists). He added another 58 goals and 88 assists for 146 points in 176 playoff games.

NHL Western Conference Predictions/Previews

This is the third year Ed Cmar has offered predictions as to how the Western Conference will sort out. But unlike how he assessed the predicted outcomes in prior seasons by determining who would be in (the playoffs), who would be out of playoff consideration and who would be on the fringe, he’s modified my predictions by where I believe each team will place, overall.

While this changed method is subject to more error, when it comes to the NHL and its playoffs, your seeding/position doesn’t matter.

With that, here are my predictions (in ascending order, from 1st to 15th):

Detroit Red Wings Announce Another Round of Cuts

red wings

The Detroit Red Wings today announced another round of cuts. 16 more players have been dismissed from the team’s training camp roster, leaving 39 players remain in camp.

Members of both the Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) will hit the ice at Western Michigan University’s Van Andel Arena (see pic of WMU cheerleader below) later today for a Red-White intrasquad game. If you’re in K-Zoo, (or even in Battlecreek, Paw Paw, Coldwater or Climax) you may want to check it out.

The following players did not escape the chopping block and now find themselves reassigned to the Griffins:
