NFL Draft 2012: Best and worst team-to-player fits

NFL-DRAFT

When newly drafted players join their NFL teams this season, the coaches, system and competition each encounters will have a huge influence on how quickly they can make an impact. Here’s a look at the best and worst fits for players drafted in 2012. Note: this isn’t an assessment of good or bad picks, but rather an analysis of the best and worst marriages between player and team with regards to maximizing each player’s potential.

What should the Bengals do with their first 3 draft picks?

What should the Cleveland Browns do with their first 3 draft picks?

What will the Cleveland Browns do with the 4th overall pick?

There is an advantage for a Browns fan being a pessimist.  You are either pleasantly surprised or you are right. (Guest post by Bill Smith)

Things have been bad before.  Things were so bad in the early 90’s with Bill Belichick running the team that the club moved from Cleveland to Baltimore and did not give the coach the forwarding address.

Since they have come back in 1999 the team has been pathetic.  There are more needs on this team than players that can start for any of the other teams in the AFC North division.  Browns fans love to mock Mike Brown and the Bengals but they have been to two Super Bowls and have been in the playoffs two of the last 3 years including a division championship in 2010 when they swept the division.

Detroit Lions Draft Analysis

Things are finally looking up for the Detroit Lions. They are appearing in Monday Night Football for the first time in a decade against the Chicago Bears on October 10th.

Wide receiver Calvin Johnson is appearing regularly in national advertising spots. For the first time in numerous years, the faithful will gather at the Hard Rock Café and not witness a selection in the single digits of the first round. Most importantly, head coach Jim Schwartz is putting a quality product on the field.

Oh yeah, by the way there is a work stoppage. Sorry to rain on that parade.

2011 NFL Mock Draft 5-6

nfl-draft

By Paul M. Banks

When you hit the comments section, remember that team needs were sometimes, but very rarely, taken into account with this NFL mock draft. Mostly because I know those needs will change numerous times between now and next April. Order was determined by creating a hybrid of various NFL power rankings across the internet, and considering which teams became stronger or weaker during this past draft weekend. So in summation, don’t take these picks with a grain of salt; take them with an entire salt truck.

If you were watching last night’s NFL Draft on ESPN, you undoubtedly saw the updates from premier sideline princesses Erin Andrews (at the home of ND quarterback Jimmy Clausen) and Jenn Brown (reporting from the house of Texas signal-caller Colt McCoy). Neither QB was drafted last night, so it means we’ll likely be treated to more eye candy tonight, as the reigning Queen and crown princess of sports media will undoubtedly see a lot more airtime.

49ers: NFL team with the most potentially productive draft

singletary boxers

By Paul M. Banks

San Francisco’s draft strategy is simple: always take the best available player right? Their front office stresses value over need. Perhaps even more than the GMs of the New York Giants (Jerry Reese) and Green Bay Packers (Ted Thompson). But they have plenty of needs to fill too. And as one of the two NFL teams with 2 picks in the 1st round, (Seattle is the other, but they’re kind of a hot mess right now) they could easily find themselves back in the playoffs next year should they make the right moves.

Some non-Tebow Gators will get drafted in 1st round

gator dazzlers

By Paul M. Banks

If you have any connection at all to the state of the Florida and/or college football, you might have heard a thing or two about an ultra-pious, overly emotional Florida Gators QB named St. Tim Tebow. And if you’ve followed any pre-NFL Draft coverage (stories on the combine, pro days, Senior Bowl etc.) at all in these months leading up to it, you’ve probably heard St. Tim’s name a few times. After all his name has been published about 1,000 times more than your typical (projected) 5th-6th round draft pick. However, part of what made St. Tebow such a legendary college football player was all the overwhelming NFL ready talent surrounding him. And if the mainstream sports media didn’t devote 99.999% of their Gators coverage to the merits and virtues of Tebow, you might know a little more about these names I’m about to mention.
