Chicago Bears one of three finalists for HBO Hard Knocks

Chicago Bears DE Jared Allen

It was revealed today that the Chicago Bears are one of three finalists, along with the Steelers and Giants, to be the team featured on HBO Hard Knocks

The Chicago Bears have done a lot to improve the team heading towards the 2014-15 season. The additions of Lamarr Houston, Willie Young, and most recently Jared Allen will help an abysmal defense. The signing of Allen will also put Chicago head and shoulders above the other eligible teams for HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’ series.

Allen, tight end Martellus Bennett, and head coach Marc Trestman may be three of the most unique and entertaining people in the NFL. What better way to showcase three phases of a team than with a slightly off defensive end, an enlightening offensive weapon, and the “nerdy” head coach in a macho sport. Those are just the three of the better known personalities from last season. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, offensive lineman Kyle Long, linebacker Lance Briggs, and quarterback Jay Cutler have been the subject of talk based on their characteristics. [Read more…]

Chicago Bears Predictions: Week Two

‘Joestradmaus’ still has the magic touch. The Bengals put up three more points than I predicted, but cut a guy a break; at the end of the day, the Bears still won.

Charles Tillman and the gang managed to corral the one-man wrecking crew known as A.J. Green before things got too far out of hand, and the offense showed some promising signs as they dug out of a late double-digit deficit to start the Trestman Era on the right foot.

But this week’s contest against the Minnesota Vikings doesn’t just feature a one-man wrecking crew, it features a deity cleverly disguised as a human who snacks on Bears defensive play calls as if they were Jolly Ranchers.

This week, I’ll tell you why ‘Purple Jesus’ Adrian Peterson will continue his reign of terror at Soldier Field, and why the Bears will still come out winners in the end.

Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck showing promise entering third game against Jacksonville Jaguars

Andrew Luck was billed as the most NFL-ready quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning — some even said John Elway.

It seems fitting, then, that the 23-year-old rookie was drafted first overall by the Indianapolis Colts, the franchise that drafted both Manning and Elway (the latter forced a trade from the franchise when it was in Baltimore) with the top pick.

While the expectations of Luck have been enormous, he has shown promise in his first two starts as the Colts’ quarterback. He’ll look to build on that promise at 1 p.m. today as the Colts (1-1) play host to their division rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Indianapolis Colts look for first win in home opener against Minnesota Vikings

The Indianapolis Colts weren’t so fortunate in the scheduling department for Week 1 of the 2012 NFL season, drawing a matchup against a strong Chicago Bears team at Soldier Field and losing 41-21.

The Colts (0-1) might fare better there this week.

Indianapolis, on the heels of a rough opening to the Andrew Luck era — the No. 1 pick in April’s draft turned the ball over four times in his first career start — will look to grab its first win of the season at 1 p.m. today in its home opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

There is plenty of bad news surrounding the NFL in the Twin Cities this fall. I will not pile on in this blog because it is plentiful from other sources. Instead, I will point out some of the strong points at this midway juncture of the season. It has taken some in-depth research and numerous hours of memory jogging exercises to delve into the positive aspects of the Vikings play.

Tice better be prepared for Jared Allen and company

Jared Allen should be keeping Bears offensive line coach Mike Tice awake at night.

The 6’6″ 270 pound end Allen already has 4 sacks and 26 tackles, and is a sizeable mismatch for Frank Omiyale to guard on Sunday when the Bears play at home.

At times Omiyale has looked more “LOST” trying to figure out what end or blitzing linebacker to pick up for a block than the entire fanbase of the popular ABC television show after the season finale.

Sidetracked: Athlete Websites—How Far Is Too Far?

Jared Allen

By: Melissa S. Wollering

Jared Allen, you’re nasty and I mean that in the vilest way possible.  Viewing your website is such a sleezgusting act (sleezy/disgusting), that I contemplated whether I would dive headfirst into my own vomit if given the choice between the two. How did your PR consultants let you get away with this?

Mr. Allen has found a cheeky way to market his jersey number and sell a few overpriced t-shirts in the same dogbreath. It is also an incredibly entertaining website, so I can’t completely disregard it.  And therein lies the problem.

Jared Allen 69, Inc. introduces your 2nd favorite Minnesota Viking via video with an open and honest discussion about mullets.  YES, MULLETS. Whether you have a baby mullet or mature mullet, Jared tells his fanbase that it should be growing one. If a Jared Allen fan is not, one is then instructed to start the process. If you’ve already lost your hair, don’t fret my pet.  Grow a skullet.

If you haven’t joined the Mullet Militia, you’re allegedly missing out on a quality lifestyle. “One county, one haircut, one young baby at a time—Mullet Militia.” What you’re not missing out on is the self-worshipping sex-marketing Jared Allen has embarked on, complete with trashy babe-enticing merchandising and a logo that was ripped off from Anheuser-Busch.

His photos are priceless.  A gun stuffed in his crotch, secured by a cowboy belt buckle.  A dreamy Baywatch pose of Allen, slicking back his mullet with a little grease and sporting a Sax Machine t-shirt.  Get it, SACKS….  Okay, that was bad form, even for me.

So how much is overkill? When does over-the-top become outright flop? This week in Sidetracked, we take a closer look at what works and what doesn’t for athlete websites. [Read more…]
