Pacers will make Evan Turner reach his potential

evan-turner-cheerleaders

Evan Turner’s rookie year with the Philadelphia 76ers has been anything but normal; and not in a good way. The Chicago native who took home all the major national player of the year awards in college basketball during his final season of “amateur” status at Ohio State. His NBA career get off to a very rough start. He looked terrible in summer league; had an atrocious first couple months and when he returned to play in his hometown versus the Bulls for the first time, his numbers read like this: 6.3 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 40.6 FG%, 1.8 Asst. The Sixers demanded better ROI on their 3 year, $12 million investment.

(UPDATE: Evan Turner traded to Pacers)

Evan Turner probably doesn’t fit into Philadelphia’s long term plans. He’s likely to be traded by Thursday when the NBA Trade Deadline expires, and a scorer such as Turner will be in demand.

When the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Evan Turner #2 overall out of Ohio State in 2010, they thought they were selecting a franchise cornerstone. Finishing his college basketball career with the Buckeyes, he was as highly decorated as a player can be- sweeping all the national individual awards.

So this is life A.R. after Rose. As you can see above Derrick Rose watched game two of the Chicago Bulls playoff series with the Philadelphia 76ers from a United Center suite with his mom. And his absence explains the final 109-92  score.

Will The Philadelphia 76ers Shop Andre Iguodala This Off-Season?

andre iguodala 76ers

Like we are currently seeing in the NFL, the 2011 NBA off-season is up in the air with a lockout looming.  Free agency could be delayed and completely restructured depending on the new agreement reached by the owners and players.  Still, The Sports Bank continues to break down all thirty NBA teams to see what areas they need to address in the off-season.  Expect to see a ton of trade rumors surrounding Andre Iguodala this off-season and the Philadelphia 76ers might be better off dealing him in hopes of adding a center or perimeter scorer.

Will Evan Turner Play in his Return Home to Chicago vs. Bulls?

evan turner sixers

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. No, not at all.

After Ohio State University superstar Evan Turner was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers second overall in last June’s NBA Draft,  and the NBA schedule came out, I circled December 21st on the calendar, the date ET came home to face the Chicago Bulls. The Southside native who prepped with Illini point guard Demetri McCamey at St. Joseph in suburban Westchester, was going to start a professional game in his home town for the first time.

After sweeping all the national player of the year awards in college basketball, Turner looked to be on his way to becoming Philly’s franchise centerpiece. But after struggling in summer league, and getting off to a rough start in his rookie season, Turner now finds himself on the bench and hardly playing at all.

#2 Pick Evan Turner Struggling with Sixers So Far

evan turner sixers

Last spring,  I had the pleasure of covering all four weekends of March Madness. This college basketball vocational voyage, which I dubbed the “Midwest Swing,” granted me a lot of face time with the national player of the year Evan Turner. This kid from my hometown of Chicago swept all the player of the year awards en route to winning the Big Ten Tournament, reaching the sweet 16 and becoming the #2 pick in the NBA Draft.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were prominently featured in three of the four Regionals I covered in 2010, so I got to see Turner and his teammates play a hell of a lot.

From March until the beginning of the NBA season I saw Turner: become a national sensation by hitting a half-court buzzer beater to eliminate the Michigan Wolverines, whine to the media about Illini trash-talking him the next day, win a conference tournament and later every important individual award, get eliminated by Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen, get drafted second overall, get rattled by trash talk again (this time from the Purdue Boilermakers Student Section Twitter account) struggle massively in Summer League and begin his professional career.

76ers Should Compete for Playoff Spot

Evan Turner 76ers

The 76ers are coming off their worst season in thirteen years.  And to think, two years ago they were the sexy pick to win the Eastern ConferencePhiladelphia made a splash head coach hire by luring Doug Collins out from behind the color commentary booth and added one of the top college players by drafting “His Royal Smoothness” Evan Turner.  Will that be enough to get the Sixers back in the Eastern Conference playoff picture?

Sixers’ Evan Turner has his own Sportswear brand in China (Video)

Today we live in a world and marketplace that is more globalized than ever. When the NYSE is closed the Nikkei is open for business. There are deals to be closed somewhere in the world around the clock. After all, this website is one of the top 5,000 viewed sites in Costa Rica. In that vein, the Philadelphia 76ersEvan Turner is making cheddar in China, a nation where the NBA is huge! Like the video below tells us, the number of people who play basketball in China is larger than the entire population of the U.S.A.

If you follow Evan Turner on Twitter, you might notice that his page quote is the exact same that I have on my own Facebook page: Jay-Z’s famous “I’m not a business man, I’m a business; MAN!” from his rap on Kanye West’s single “Diamonds from Sierra Leone.”

Hilarious Twitter Smackdown between Evan Turner and Purdue Student Section

purdue-student

Former Ohio State legend Evan Turner has already completed his first NBA Summer league, but that hasn’t stopped the fans of his old Big Ten rivals from still talking smack at him online. I guess when you shoot just 33%, and your play doesn’t come anywhere close to living up to your hype during the five game NBA summer season,  detractors will come out of the woodwork. Including whomever runs the Twitter account for The Paint Crew, Purdue’s student cheering section.

This is good stuff- enjoy!

Evan Turner Struggled in NBA Summer League

Evan Turner sixers

NBA Draft #2 overall pick Evan Turner got off to a great start in NBA Summer League. However, after his first game things went down hill. In the opener of the NBA summer league in Orlando, Turner had 12 points and eight rebounds to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat Derrick Favors and the New Jersey Nets 84-74. Turner got the better of a match-up between the #2 and #3 picks in the Draft, playing even better than his box score would indicate. But he really struggled in his last four summer league contests.

The Ohio State product, Big Ten Player of the year, and Wooden and Naismith award winner has flourished in the open court, but struggled massively in half court sets.

Evan Turner shines in 76ers Summer League Debut

Evan Turner sixers

This July, the NBA Summer League is certainly taking a back seat to the NBA Free Agency period. But here at The Sports Bank we got you covered. Especially when it comes to His Royal Smoothness Evan Turner, the most blogged about individual in TSB history. Although David Kahn, Adam Burish, Erin Andrews and Jenn Brown are not far behind.

They say only geeks and die-hards follow the NBA Summer League. Well, include me in that group. Hey this is Mr. Turner, a southside Chicago native we’re talking about, and he put on a clinic Monday night.

Evan Turner talks about spending his new Money (Video)

Evan Turner NBA Draft

Remember this past March when Demetri McCamey, D.J. Richardson and the rest of the Illini were talking trash to Ohio State‘s Evan Turner in Big Ten Tournament semifinal game? And Turner responded by later showing the “holding my dollars” sign at the Illini bench?

Presumably that was in reference to all the money he’ll make in the NBA come June.

Well TMZ.com indeed sent this link to the right place. Because TMZ obtained video hours after the Philadelphia 76ers took Chicago native Evan Turner as the #2 overall pick in last night’s 2010 NBA Draft — the 21-year-old and his family hit Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in NY … where he told TMZ.com how he plans to spend his new fortune.
