Michigan State is a Program in Severe Crisis, but What’s Next?

As I articulated in the first part of this feature, the Michigan State college basketball season is ostensibly over. (Follow that link for more detail, but if your only colors are green and white I’m warning you now: “there’s no comfort in the truth, pain is all you’ll find,” as George Michael told us in the 1980s)

State’s packing it in is no longer news to anyone close the program; the latest no-show at Carver-Hawkeye Arena cemented their ticket not to the NCAAs, but the NIT (if they can get 3-4 more wins this season), or more likely the second division of the Big Ten. Without hyperbole, you can say Wednesday night was the worst loss of the Tom Izzo era and it makes you wonder if there’s any confidence remaining in that locker room these days. Meaning it’s already time to start thinking about next year.

And with that, time to start taking a hard look at the host of issues surrounding the current roster.

Draymond Green Needs to Lead Michigan State out of Doldrums

Draymond Green MSU

I’m beginning to think Kalin Lucas is overrated. Sure he’s accomplished a lot in his college basketball career, but the MSU floor general is the main culprit for all these Michigan State Spartans turnovers. The #8 Syracuse Orange gave #7 Mich St. a good ole fashioned whopping Tuesday night, and much of it was due to the shoddy ball-handling.

And a lot of that is on Lucas, the starting point guard; who had 6 TOs to go with just 2 assists. State now has as many 20+ turnover games this year as they had all of last year, and they have committed more turnovers than assists in half their games thus far.

Maybe their primary ball-handler, Lucas, isn’t really himself? Less than half of those athletes who suffer major Achilles injuries ever come back at full strength.

Maybe it’s a different player on State who needs to lead the Spartans back up to the top, and get them ready for Big Ten play?

Is Draymond Green the next Charles Barkley?

As Kermit the frog once taught us, “it’s not easy being green.” To wear the green and white of Michigan State, a player must be tough, tenacious, defend like his hair is on fire and be almost willing to give his life for a defensive rebound. Kind of sounds like sophomore forward Draymond Green.

Like the narrator said in “300,” “Only the hard can be Spartans, only the strong.”
