The 2014 BSPYs

Awards shows are self-congratulatory industry bacchanalia that we play voyeur to because we love watching rich and famous people be rich and famous and pretend to be humble.

Slap on a death montage and a lifetime achievement award of some sort to keep it from being a full blown orgy of how awesome everyone must think this specific entertainment medium being celebrated is.

White Sox need more from Beckham, Dunn and Rios in 2012

adam-dunn

The three big albatross contracts on the Chicago White Sox are those belonging to Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and Jake Peavy. They are the three most overpaid underachievers on the Sox; at least in 2011 anyway. They are three players most Sox fans point the finger at for what went wrong last year. I agree on the first two, but think the third biggest problem is Gordon Beckham.

Peavy however, does actually have a winning record during his stay on the south side, believe it or not. And he’s 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA this young season; making a very positive statement with his strong showing versus the Detroit Tigers on opening day.

Chicago White Sox Opening Day U.S. Cellular Field Review

Jake Peavy Chicago White Sox

A week into the 2012 season it is apparent that a new era has begun on the south side of Chicago.  After several months of anticipation, White Sox fans finally had their chance to witness the team and the many new additions to the ballpark firsthand.

This was our time to see a rebuilding team, to say goodbye to some of our favorite players and to formally embrace a new manager with a completely different style in Robin Ventura.  So what were the highlights of opening day? New “must try” additions to U.S. Cellular Field

White Sox Home Opener is Here!

In all the years I’ve been a White Sox contributor for the Sportsbank.net there has never been a season where expectations for the team has been lower as the words “new era” and “rebuilding” are frequently associated with the team.  As a matter of fact most experts and sports periodicals pick the southsiders to be among the worst teams in the game.  So in a year where there is so much negativity in terms of expectations why is the Soxman so motivated to cheer with passion and pride?

Terry Francona is the Wrong Boston Red Sox Fall Guy

Theo Epstein

When a team has the largest collapse of all time during the month of September, there is plenty of blame to go around. Terry Francona, former Boston Red Sox manager, received the brunt of it recently after his meeting with the team’s hierarchy. The franchise decided not to pick up Francona’s option for next season.

Theo Epstein is widely viewed as a baseball mastermind. With Brad Pitt playing another baseball executive in Moneyball, it’s a stretch to put Epstein into the same category. Many of his signings haven’t produced the forecasted results. There have been rumors of him heading to Chicago to work with the Cubs, but it’s difficult to fathom his departure unless he is forced out. The only thing that the Windy City brings to the table is a bigger challenge and the headaches that accompany it.

White Sox Adam Dunn: WORST. SEASON. EVER. Fire Ken Williams!

Manager Ozzie Guillen was let go by the Chicago White Sox last week, but the man who should have been cut was GM Kenny Williams. Williams has made so many bad trades, and HORRIBLE free agent signings that he was the one who really deserved to be cut.

Why? He wasted all that money on Adam Dunn, Alex Rios and Jake Peavy– all ludicrously overpaid underachieving wastes of space that you can squarely point the finger  at for what a pathetic season it was on the south side.

“All in” my ass! We’ll touch on all these individuals, but let’s focus on the big FAT ASS Adam Dunn. Showing up horribly out of shape in spring training (after signing a four year $56 million contract) is one thing, but being unable to streamline your lard ass even though you’re a professional athlete with  access to the best exercise equipment and nutritionists every day?

Minnesota Twins are in Total Free Fall

Delmon Young

The Minnesota Twins have been plummeting in the American League Central standings. There win percentage may be lower than Adam Dunn’s batting average by the end of September. The Scott Baker injury recently put the icing on the cake of a disastrous season. Fans looking for a bargain in the Twin Cities should look to purchase tickets secondhand during an NFL Sunday. They could pick up the seats for next to nothing.

In analyzing the struggles of the ball club, the most glaring shortcoming is the lack of RBI production from those who should have provided more impressive numbers. Delmon Young, Jason Kubel, Justin Morneau, and Joe Mauer were all expected to have substantially more runs batted in. Usually the team can weather the storm if one of its players falls off, but when it’s almost everyone, good luck.

Twins and White Sox Have a Lot in Common

American League fans in Chicago and Minneapolis have experienced tremendous disappointment so far this season. The lackluster play of their clubs has had many sitting on their hands at US Cellular and Target Fields. There are actually tremendous parallels between the two situations. It starts with a list of three disappointing players on each roster.

Will Ozzie Guillen Manage The Florida Marlins? Kenny Williams be fired?

ozzie-guillen

As the Chicago White Sox continue to let the AL Central slip away, White Sox fans are beginning to demand changes. Both General Manager Kenny Williams and Manager Ozzie Guillen are drawing the angst of White Sox Fans. With the Florida Marlins getting set to open a new stadium next season, Ozzie living in Florida in the off-season and his ties to the Marlin’s organization, could Guillen be the fighting fish’s new skipper in 2012? As GM Kenny Williams “All In” plan is obviously failing, will his firing be imminent?

The Sportsbank has an inside look at those questions.

White Sox Fire Sale? Edwin Jackson traded to Blue Jays, Danks and Floyd on Trading Block

Earlier today, the White Sox traded pitcher Edwin Jackson and utility man Mark Teahen to the Blue Jays for reliever Jason Frasor and minor-league pitching prospect Zach Stewart. Jackson may not even have time to put a Jays cap on as he is expected to be traded to the Cardinals in a deal for CF Colby Rasmus. Rasmus was recently the center of trade rumors with the White Sox in a deal for Carlos Quentin and Matt Thornton. Jackson was inconsistent in his time with the White Sox but has been solid as of late. He is 7-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 19 starts for the White Sox.

Does this trade indicate White Sox GM Kenny Williams has officially waived the white flag on the 2011 season or is he building on strengths for a stretch run?
