Rex Ryan and the New York Jets will part ways after Sunday’s game. (Ryan himself has known this for quite some time) Multiple outlets, who are very close to the organization, are reporting this. Jets GM John Idzik will be out of a job as well.
Come Monday, (apologies of the Jimmy Buffett reference) this news will be made official. The NFL’s “Black Monday” has claimed it’s first victims.
This is a totally bone-headed decision, but the way it was done, makes it even more ridiculous. This is very Jet like. Shows NO CLASS AT ALL!
Fox Sports Jay Glazer on the belief that the New York Jets will be replacing both their head coach and general manager: “We know about John Idzik and Rex Ryan, and it looks like both of them are out. They have not said anything to Rex Ryan. However, in a very Jets kind of way, somebody involved in the search actually called Rex Ryan’s agent to inquire about another one of his clients for Rex Ryan’s job. There is a right way to do it and a Jets way to do it; do it the right way.”
Seriously? Contacting the agent of Rex Ryan to find his new replacement? Ridiculous!
And read this bit from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
“As far as Rex Ryan, he personally is so sure that he’s going to get fired that I am told he has been joking with staff members about that really over the last several weeks. He thinks he is out as well.”
You can pass the blame around for the Jets disaster of a season. Just don’t ask Geno Smith to pass the blame because he can’t pass anything very well. His career passer rating is just, you know what this is a family website so we don’t need to subject you to that. The Jets were the laughingstock of the NFL punditocracy all season long. Marshall Faulk’s dig at the Jets receiving corps may have trumped everybody them all.
Last year the Jets didn’t fire Rex Ryan because there was a fear in the organization that they would fire him, someone else would hire him and all of a sudden start winning. That fear no longer exists. However, as we’ve pointed out, Ryan is the perfect candidate to succeed Marc Trestman in Chicago.
Trestman’s firing is imminent, and Rex Ryan is the perfect embodiment on the anti-thetical Trestman. (By the way, here are six other candidates who could replace Trestman)
