I’ve never been a big fan of the “no homo” slang expression. Obviously Indiana Pacers Center Roy Hibbert feels differently. Of course, now with the trouble the “no homo” catch-phrase has gotten Roy Hibbert into, maybe he now has as much distaste for it as I do.
It’s mildly offensive; and just not funny or clever. And in today’s day and age, just unnecessary. It’s nothing to get into a big uproar about either. It’s a stupid thing to say, but nothing that should get Roy Hibbert fined.
At last night’s postgame media session, the Pacers big guy ended a response to a question with “no homo.” He was asked about defending NBA MVP LeBron James.
“I am apologizing for insensitive remarks made during the postgame press conference after our victory over Miami Saturday night,” Roy Hibbert said (or more likely a Pacers PR pro crafted) in an official statement released by the Indiana Pacers.
“They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night,” Roy Hibbert is quoted.
Was it dumb? Yes.
Enough to jeopardize his availability for game 7 versus the Miami Heat? Absolutely not.
