Cubs MLB Draft Day 2, and Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald on the mic

Today was a big day for the Chicago Cubs. Sure, they lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0. However, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald sang the 7th inning stretch, and the Cubs loaded up for the future during day two of the MLB Draft. Getting drafted by an MLB ballclub is a really big deal for these kids. Even if it is the Cubs!

“Still counts” as Lonely Island and Akon would say.

The Cubs thus far have selected 10 players. The third and final day of the draft is tomorrow with rounds 11-40. The Cubs took outfielder Jacob Hannemann from Brigham Young University in the third round (75th overall), right-handed pitcher Tyler Skulina from Kent State University in the fourth round (108th overall) and right-handed pitcher Trey Masek out of Texas Tech University in the fifth round (138th overall).

The Cubs last night selected right-handed hitting third baseman Kris Bryant out of the University of San Diego with the second overall pick. In the second round, the Cubs selected left-handed pitcher Robert Zastryzny from the University of Missouri, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Through the first two days, the Cubs have selected seven pitchers (five righthanders and two lefthanders), one infielder and two outfielders. Additionally, the Cubs have selected nine college players and one high school player.

And Pat Fitzgerald sang the 7th inning stretch. So that’s an ALL CAPS! MOMENT! Also, the low temperature today was 51 DEGREES! Like Coach Fitz 51!

The Cubs and the Northwestern Wildcats have a partnership of their own. They are very closely intertwined as NU Athletic Director Jim Phillips lives on the same street and attends the same church as Cubs Owner Tom Ricketts.
