United Hope to Ward off PSG by Making David de Gea Highest Paid Player

About a week ago, we learned that contract talks between the representation of David de Gea and Manchester United football club had stalled out. De Gea, who will see his contract expire in the summer, is reportedly keen to renew, but he wants to first see how things play out this season.

His concern and thus tentativeness in signing a new deal is perfectly understandable given how the season has gone thus far. United, despite their massive payroll and usual high expectations, sit just eighth in the Premier League table right now.

De Gea is United’s best player, and few would argue against that. Now might be the time that Old Trafford pays him accordingly. United are set to make De Gea, who has won the club’s Player of the Year award four times in five years, the club’s highest earner according to the Manchester Evening News.

It makes sense because they know if De Gea would hit the open market, the number of potential suitors would be extremely high. According to multiple English newspapers, Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring the situation closely and stand ready to swoop in should an opportunity arise.

According to the Mail Online, De Gea’s hesitation in penning a new contract centers around the uncertainty surrounding manager Jose Mourinho’s future. The Daily Mail report also claims that fellow Spaniards Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are also contemplating their futures with the club.

For Real Madrid, this could be the second time they miss out on signing their local product. The Madrid native saw his 11th hour 2015 summer deadline day move fall apart at the last minute, over a clerical snafu that both sides blamed on the other club. Now with having acquired Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea this summer, they won’t be in the market for De Gea if/when he becomes available.
