UEFA Considering Cap on Agent Fees After Alexis Sanchez Deal

UEFA are once again looking at agent fees in the wake of the blockbuster Alexis Sanchez-Henrikh Mkhitaryan swap deal.

The transaction between Arsenal and Manchester United, which was closed over the weekend and announced on Monday, could have a legacy as the European governing body “is considering a cap on agents’ fees following a meeting of its Professional Football Strategy Group,” according to the Daily Mail.

“The PSFG, which consists of the main stakeholders in European football, discussed a range of new initiatives at a summit in Nyon, Switzerland on Tuesday. Financial Fair Play, squad size limits, and a ‘transfer tax’ were also examined.”

Sanchez’s salary under the new contract is extremely rich, as he could now earn up to £600,000 per week. It’s a deal that’s breaking new ground when it comes to exorbitant football player salaries, and it earned his agent, Fernando Felicevich a £15 million fee. Manchester United, sometimes jokingly referred to as Mino Raiola FC, know first hand the power of the super agent these days, and that is precisely what UEFA is examining, looking at ways to possibly keep it in check.

Raiola represents the player who went the other way in the transfer swap, as well as other United summer of 2016 signees Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba.

The Pogba deal, then the richest in world history, netted a transfer fee of £89.3 million and a £24 million payday for Raiola, who literally then went out and purchased a mansion that once belonged to Al Capone.
