Ever since Tottenham Hotspur first unveiled their full stadium scheme, with graphics, artist renderings and videos last summer, the story of what they’ll do in the meantime has truly been a fascinating narrative to follow.
Spurs are planning to move into their newly built stadium by August of 2018. In the meantime, they’ll need a temporary home for 2017-18. Wembley Stadium in London is what THFC are seeking, and they may be close to securing that arrangement.
That’s according to a story today in ESPN FC:
Tottenham are close to agreeing a deal with the Football Association to play at Wembley for at least one season, a source close to the negotiations has told ESPN FC.
Tottenham had considered stadium:mk — the 30,500-capacity home of Championship club MK Dons — but have settled on Wembley, and in February they confirmed they had held “positive talks” with the FA over the 90,000-seater national stadium.
The talks are being personally conducted by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and senior FA officials, and have progressed to a point where both parties are confident of reaching a deal, the source said.
Earlier in the process, Tottenham were shockingly told to go move in with Arsenal instead.
Uhm, yeah, good luck with that idea. Currently, Wembley protocol limits the venue to just 37 live events per year, so that will certainly be a sticking point to work with and try to get around.
However, today, it appears that the national stadium has a very high likelihood of being the destination for one season, and perhaps even two. Spurs would only need to play in Wembley Stadium for one season, but they’re preparing for any potential obstructions or issues that could delay their timeline.
Hence, Levy is reportedly negotiating for a two year deal, should any unforeseen problems arise in the construction of their 61,000 seat stadium.
