There have been various reports that Manchester United will complete the £12.9 million signing of Torino Defender Matteo Darmian today. There have been reports that he will undergo a medical on Friday and join the club before they fly to Seattle to take on Club America in their first preseason friendly versus Club America.
The Daily Mirror went so far as to claim that the Italy international has already released a farewell letter to the Turin club’s fans online. However, in reality, we need to pump the brakes a bit on this. All this stuff is jumping the gun somewhat. Torino president Urbano Cairo claims that Matteo Darmian is still a member of his club, not United.
He just told Italy’s La7 television:
“I’m really very attached to Darmian and he remains a very important player for us.”
“We all know how much interest there is in him and how many offers he’s got from Serie A and from abroad.”
“United are certainly a huge and prestigious club, but as far as a sale goes there is absolutely nothing official yet. So I don’t like to talk about situations which are not yet well defined, and making them out to be done.”
We profiled Matteo Darmian, and how he might fit in with United’s back line a couple days ago; you can read that piece here.
