Man City 2nd biggest transfer spenders in Europe, Man United 3rd, Chelsea 5th

The CIES Football Observatory has calculated and graphed the transfer spending in the big five leagues of Europe.  CIES computed how much was spent in total by each club in order to acquire the players currently residing on their roster. Real Madrid led the continent with 587 million euros.

Manchester City was second at 560 million euros. Manchester United was third at 533 million. Fourth was Ligue 1 club Paris Saint Germain at 525. Chelsea was fifth with 407 million.

Winners of UEFA Champions League Barcelona were sixth overall, and second in La Liga, with expenditures of 394 million euros.

The other Champions League finalist, Juventus, led Serie A spending at 301 million. Juve were tenth overall in Europe.

Bayern Munich paced the Bundesliga (seventh overall) at 337 million. Two more Barclay’s Premier League sides, Arsenal and Liverpool, round out the top ten.
