The past, present and future of Luke Shaw was a hot topic when Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho met the media a few hours ago to preview tomorrow’s match at Newcastle United F.C. We have video of the media session for you here at this link.
Shaw has had a true roller coaster ride since coming over to Old Trafford from Southampton in the summer of 2014. He’s dealt with injuries great and small, been up and down the depth chart over and over again, and had relationships with his manager that could accurately be described sometimes as “rocky.”
Currently though, he’s back in the playing rotation and enjoying a good relationship with Mourinho. He’s definitely evolved during his stay, and that evolution means he’ll likely be at United for years to come.
“He has been free of minor injuries for a few months which sometimes stops the evolution and I’m really happy,” said Mourinho on the topic of Luke Shaw.
“The natural consequence of it is that he will have his contract and he will be a United player for years.”
The club triggered the one year option on his deal, which means he’s now signed until June 2019. However, according to various reports, contract extension talks have not yet begun.
“With Luke it is not about changing my mind, it’s just the evolution or no evolution of his potential. It’s just about that. I know Shaw since he arrived in the Premier League with Southampton and I know his potential and quality,” Mourinho said.
“I like my players to be, not just on the pitch, but during the training week, and he made a big effort.”
