Look out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, because international football legend Diego Maradona is gunning for your gig. There is a whole lot wrong with Manchester United, and there are many competing theories as to who can fix it and how. Club legend Gary Neville seems to have as good an answer as anybody, while Argentinian icon Maradona proclaimed himself the potential savior.
“If Manchester [United] need a coach, I’m the man to do it,” Maradona said in an exclusive interview with Four Four Two. Maradona currently leads Dorados in the second division of Mexican football.
He also has experience coaching Argentina, as well as two teams in the United Arab Emirates.
He certainly has a lot more name recognition than experience, but he definitely gets it regarding the biggest of the big picture problems that United have right now.
“I know they sell lots of shirts around the world, but they need to win trophies, too. I can do that for them,” Diego Maradona continued, before articulating his love for the club.
“Manchester United used to be my favorite English team for so long. So many great players and a great team under Alex Ferguson. But now I have to say Man City.”
“I know you shouldn’t change like that but it’s because of Kun [Aguero]. We speak a lot and he plays in a very good team.”
United have finished in the top four in just two of the six seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Currently, Paul Pogba is the team’s most talented outfield player, but Maradona slammed the Frenchman’s work ethic. It remains to be seen what United can actually achieve on the pitch, as long as the colorful midfielder is their best player.
“With United I liked Ander Herrera. Paul Pogba? Doesn’t work hard enough,” Maradona added, before praising the side’s supporters.
“I played at Old Trafford [in the 1983/84 Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final]. What noise, like La Bombonera.”
