Harry Kane was the center of attention when Tottenham Hotspur won in a rout at Burnley 3-0 yesterday, and for good reason. His hat trick gave him 36 goals for the calendar year 2017, putting him level with Alan Shearer for the Premier League record. He has one more chance to separate himself from Shearer, on Boxing Day at home against Southampton.
As Kane’s boss, Mauricio Pochettino, prepped for the match against the team that he used to manage, he discussed the potential of the young English striker.
Pochettino believes that Harry Kane still hasn’t reached his ceiling.
“I think he still can improve. He’s 24, I think the player arrives at their best at 27, 28, 29, depending how professional you are,” Pochettino said.
“But Harry Kane, if he keeps that mentality, keeps working hard every day in the training sessions and never changes that mentality, he can play until he wants to.”
“Of course the record of Alan is fantastic. He was a fantastic player, but Harry is doing so well. I think Alan was consistent during 10 years scoring goals and you need to show massive respect because it was amazing what he did.”
“Now Harry is doing well, we hope for Tottenham, for him, for everyone that loves the club, that every season he scores 50 or more than 50.”
Harry Kane is tied with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah for the Premier League scoring lead with 15 goals. Right behind them are Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, who each have a dozen.
Harry Kane was called a “freak of a goal scorer” by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard this week.
Speaking on BT Sport Gerrard said: “(Alan) Shearer was a freak of a goalscorer. There’s another one here. He’s going to be the [Premier] league’s top scorer for the next 10 years. He wanted the record today and he obsessed with scoring.”
