It’s official now- Pep Guardiola is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season and Carlo Ancelotti is replacing him at the Allianz Arena. So where is he headed? There seems to be competing theories out there about who’s actually winning the Pep Guardiola derby. We do know that it’s mainly a three horse race- Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.
(UPDATE: What the bookmakers have regarding the latest odds on Pep Guardiola’s next gig)
Let’s take a spin around the coaching carousel and see what both the tabloids and the mainstream news outlets are saying.
NBC Sports’ Pro Soccer Talk claim that Chelsea are the front-runners:
“The 44-year-old Spaniard is said to be chased by Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea but it is the latter who are said to be “willing to do anything” to get the former Barcelona coach to Stamford Bridge.”
This link has a video to Neil Ashton of the Daily Mail discussing the Guardiola derby. It’s been said by Sky Sports that Gaurdiola would prefer the London lifestyle to Manchester. However, one ESPN FC pundit said over the weekend that the Catalan Coach has a soft spot for United.
The main headline story, currently centrally featured on the ESPN FC homepage, is this opinion piece describing why United would make the most sense for Guardiola and why it’s the best fit.
Elsewhere, on the back pages today-
According to the Daily Star: “Chelsea will go all out to get Pep Guardiola as their next manager with Roman Abramovich only looking at other targets if he fails to convince the Bayern Munich manager to move to London.”
The narrative in The Sun states: “Roman Abramovich has told Pep Guardiola he will give him anything he wants to take over at Chelsea next summer.”
According to the Daily Express: “Roman Abramovich will break the bank in an attempt to outbid Manchester City and land Pep Guardiola as Chelsea’s new manager this summer with a contract worth more than £17 million a year.”
