Denmark vs Croatia on Sunday was probably the game of the World Cup thus far, and Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel turned in a performance for the ages. On this day, the Leicester City number 1 was no longer Peter Schmeichel’s son.
It’s just too bad that it was all in a losing cause, because Schmeichel deserves to go on to the quarterfinals all by himself. Maybe the most memorable images of this World Cup have been Schmeichel the elder reacting to the tremendous penalty kick saves made by Schmeichel the younger; especially Luka Modric’s attempt.

Having just put on a display of dominance for the entire world to see, Schmeichel may soon realize a chance to move to a bigger club, and collect a much bigger paycheck. He’s now in the cross-hairs of both AS Roma and Chelsea FC, according to reports from Sky Sports.
Schmeichel may enter the summer transfer window goalkeeper carousel that includes Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea and Brazil’s Alisson Becker, currently with AS Roma. Both have been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and if either one bolts for the European champions, Schmeichel could be the replacement.
We can’t leave Liverpool out of the between the sticks domino theory, though. Their need and desire for a Loris Karius replacement means they will likely have a tremendous influence on who goes where. They are reportedly targeting Alisson most of all, but conventional wisdom says the Brazilian would more likely leave for Madrid.
It should get very interesting on this front before the summer transfer window shuts.
