Gareth Southgate Analogizes Sterling-Gomez Row to ‘family disagreement’

gareth southgate

Without getting into specific details about what exactly happened, England manager Gareth Southgate spoke to the media about the training ground bust-up between winger Raheem Sterling and central defender Joe Gomez. Hey, who says international breaks are always boring, right? Southgate likened the row to a “family disagreement.”

Three Lions currently top Group A with 15 points from six matches, but they’ll be without Sterling when they host Montenegro on Thursday. England suspended the Manchester City man for the match on Thursday, but he remains with the Three Lions camp and he is still in contention to play in the road trip at Kosovo on Sunday.

(Update: England both Gareth Southgate speaks to reporters on the incident)

Happy international break everybody! Looks like we have a serious row going on to discuss these next couple of weeks. England/Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling is among the best attacking players in the world right now, but his talent and production simply does not excuse wild, aggressive behavior like this.

Sterling will be left out of the England squad that hosts Montenegro on Thursday night, in Euro 2020 qualifying competition, after a serious training ground bust-up with teammate Joe Gomez. The Daily Mail’s Matt Hughes and Sami Mokbel (h/t NBC Sports) report that Sterling tried to grab Gomez by the neck at St George’s Park on Monday.

Mohamed Salah Re-Occurring Ankle Injury Causing Concern for Liverpool

MO SALAH

As both Graeme Souness and Jose Mourinho have pointed out, there’s only one thing that can stop Liverpool from winning the Premier League title this season– a full blown injury crisis. And by that we mean, several, not just one or two, key players being out of commission for awhile due to injury.

Superstar winger Mohamed Salah has been playing through the pain of a chronic ankle problem, and it has something that Liverpool “has major concerns” about, according to an ESPN report.  After scoring Liverpool’s second goal in the blockbuster 3-1 win over Manchester City yesterday he was hit by a strong challenge from Fernandinho.

Yesterday’s 3-1 win over Manchester City at home was a glorious moment for Liverpool FC and their supporters. The victory put them firmly in the driver’s seat, with both hands clasping the wheel, in the Premier League title race. For injured Liverpool supporter Sean Cox though, the day was about so much more than just football or sport.

Cox, who was brutally attacked by AS Roma ultras while in Rome for a 2018 UEFA Champions League semifinal match, was back at Anfield for the first time since the vicious assault. It took 18 months of treatment and then 12 weeks for Sean Cox to make it back to this point.

They are an even more astounding nine points ahead of reigning back-to-back champions Manchester City. Without a doubt, it’s their title to lose now. So much for that Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool FC transfer narrative.

Wait, what Mbappe to Liverpool was a thing?

Apparently, yes that was a transfer rumor floating about; as ridiculous as the concept sounds. It’s a moot point anyway as Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp ruled it out during his news conference ahead of the blockbuster fixture this weekend at Manchester City.

Liverpool FC at Manchester City Team News: Ederson, Mane, D. Silva

No hype necessary for Liverpool FC at Manchester City, a match-up of the two sides that gave us the greatest title chase the Premier League has even seen last season. And the mind games for this one started very early. Man City boss Pep Guardiola called Liverpool winger Sadio Mane a diver last weekend.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp responded by pointing out City’s recent history of getting away with minor fouls. Mane responded to Guardiola’s comments by saying, albeit in a bizarre way that we won’t let Pep’s commentary change his game. He also joked? (said half-jokingly?) that he will dive again if it means winning a penalty kick for his side. And amidst all this nuttiness, we have some team news to cover, and we’ll start with the visitors.

Jurgen Klopp Gives Hilarious, Candid Take on Extreme Fixture Congestion

Liverpool football club are in a very unique position, one that has rarely, if ever, been seen before. Festive period fixture congestion, plus the fact that they’re alive in so many different competitions, has them with a schedule conflict. Literally, they have to pay two different games on the same exact day.

So they have decided that instead of trying to reschedule the December 17 date, where the Reds will compete in both the EFL Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, they’ll just field two entirely different teams. In response to this move, the English Football League have warned LFC that they “must meet the competition’s selection requirements” for the quarterfinal tie versus Aston Villa.

Man City GK Ederson Suffers Injury in UCL Match, Misses Second Half

Manchester City have what could be another major injury concern ahead of the super Sunday showdown at home against Liverpool. Starting goalkeeper Ederson played the first 45 minutes of side’s 1-1 draw at Atalanta, but didn’t return for the second due to what BT Sport reported was a minor injury.

The absence of Ederson for the second half of the UCL group stage clash was reportedly due to precautionary reasons, but nevertheless it makes him a doubt for the crunch clash on the weekend. We will certainly learn more after Pep Guardiola addresses the media. Here’s where it gets weird though.
