Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was involved in a challenge with AS Roma’s Aleksandar Kolarov early on in tonight’s 5-2 Liverpool victory. The Englishman underwent lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off during the home leg of the Champions League semi-final tie.

He was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum came on the pitch, and after the match, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said the former Arsenal man has a “really bad injury” that “doesn’t look good.”

It’s doubtful the 24-year-old will be able to return if the Reds reach the Champions League final on May 26 in Kiev. Oxlade-Chamberlain could also be in danger of missing out on the World Cup in June.

“We don’t know it exactly, but all the medical department is quite concerned without a scan. Then you can imagine that it’s difficult. The season is not that long anymore,” Klopp said at his postgame news conference.

“It doesn’t look good. I’m a very positive person and I hope that it only feels bad but is not that bad. We will see.”

Later, the club’s official site provided an injury update on the Ox, with Klopp telling BT Sport:

“Oxlade, it’s probably a really bad injury. If we can say that already before the scan, that’s never good news so that means for us it’s a massive blow, of course.”

“We have still a few very important games to go and the squad doesn’t get bigger in the moment, so we obviously need to be creative in the next few games.”
