Manchester United have opened for business in the summer transfer window. No it’s not a huge big name “splash hire” by any means, but on the heels from a winter transfer window that saw absolutely zero additions, at least it’s something. United have added Ireland youngster Lee O’Connor reports the Manchester Evening News.
The 15-year-old full-back comes from Waterford FC. O’Connor, a Republic of Ireland international is captain of the Ireland Under-16s and was last month named Ireland’s Under-15 player of the year.
Again, not a big name addition, but he will bolster Nicky Butt’s side.
O’Connor follows in the footsteps of John O’Shea, who came to Old Trafford in 1998 and went on to play in the United first team for a decade. United has seen a fair amount of turnover in the back line during the David Moyes and Louis van Gaal eras. There’s also been a couple “defender crises” due to a rash of injuries here and there over the past couple years. It’ll be awhile before O’Connor gets his shot with the first team, but you it might not be all that long.
