Manchester United forward Anthony Martial made a lot of headlines when he arrived on deadline day in 2015. His £36 million transfer fee raised a lot of eye brows, and with add-ons and incentive clauses, that total compensation package could potentially send that compensation package north of £50 million in a hurry.
It’s been a tumultuous second season at Old Trafford for Martial. His playing time and thus the production has substantially slipped.
Manager Jose Mourinho revealed in February that Martial still lacks for confidence. As transfer speculation swirled in mid-winter, Anthony Martial instructed people not to read what the newspapers wrote about him, as it’s not true.
One former United and France defender even urged the French youngster to remain patient, and not to “do a Pogba” and leave the club too early.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic out until January with knee ligament damage, and an overworked Marcus Rashford being rested for the upcoming Manchester Derby, Anthony Martial, along with the long forgotten captain Wayne Rooney, had their chances to step up, and indeed they did. The duo providing the scoring as United crushed lowly Burnley 2-0 on Sunday.
Coupled with Liverpool’s loss to Crystal Palace, today’s events could not have turned out better for United. Although, the Martial goal will cost them a pretty penny. Martial’s goal on Sunday was his 25th with United — the benchmark mandated to trigger an extra payment to Martial’s former club Monaco.
That goal cost made Monaco £8.5 million.
Anthony Martial has 15 caps for the France national team, 10 short of a requirement mandate that would force United to pay Monaco another £8 million
