2013 NCAA Tournament: West bracket breakdown

Warning: I will not be responsible if you copy this bracket and are out of your NCAA Tournament pool by Sunday.  However, if you do listen to my college basketball wisdom and win some money, I want 20% of the pot or at least a shout-out on your twitter or facebook page.

I don’t love the West Bracket. At. All. And by that I mean there is no stand out team who I want to pick going to the Final Four.  Of all the brackets, this seems to be the most likely one to see a darkhorse emerges since I’m not sold on the top seed Gonzaga or #2 Ohio State.

Wisconsin Badgers knock off top-seeded Indiana and improve resume in the process

Bo Ryan B1G Ten Tourney

Wisconsin Badgers forward Ryan Evans had the game of his life while leading the Badgers with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks in a 68-57 win over the top-seeded Indiana Hoosiers.

The Badgers had an underwhelming end to the regular season with a home loss to Purdue and a needed buzzer-beater to fend off lowly Penn State. Yet, they’ve taken the United Center by storm and are one win away from winning the Big Ten Tournament in a year the conference reigns over the college basketball world.

After beating Indiana for the 12th straight time and holding the Hoosiers to a season-low 56 points, Wisconsin’s head coach Bo Ryan said it best:

“There are just things in this game where no matter how you try to explain them, they defy explanation or reason.” [Read more…]

Mystery Big Ten Coach claims Bo Ryan and the Badgers ‘cheat the game’

In a recent online article from Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated, a Big Ten coach or assistant anonymously claimed that the Wisconsin Badgers basketball team “cheats the game.”

Prior to the juicy details of the article, which attempts to exploit the weaknesses of the power conference’s best teams, Davis warns that some entries may be overly negative or critical.

In the Badgers case, I think it’s safe to say their passage falls somewhere in that overly negative category.

Is it possible that some of these claims are true or does it stem from the frustration the Badgers bring on opponents when playing their hard-nosed style of basketball? [Read more…]

Wisconsin Nips the Wildcats 70-65: NCAA 3rd Round Rapid Reaction

Jordan Taylor didn’t have his best game shooting (2-of-16), but came through in the end with the biggest block of his life as the #4 Wisconsin Badgers defeated the #5 Kansas State Wildcats 70-65 in another March Madness thriller.

The Wildcats Jacob Pullen scored a crazy game-high 38 points and became Kansas State’s all-time scoring leader, but it wasn’t enough because Taylor’s rejection of Pullen’s last shot has the Badgers dancing all the way to the Sweet 16.

Wisconsin Downs Belmont 72-58: NCAA 2nd Round Rapid Reaction

So much for the #13 Belmont Bruins being that trendy 13-4 upset pick. The #4 Wisconsin Badgers offense returned to form in a 72-58 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Jon Leuer exploded for 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead the Badgers to their fifth consecutive opening-game win.

“We knew we were playing a very good team. We knew we were going to have to hit some shots. And when we’re hitting shots, believe it or not, we tend to play better,” said Badgers Head Coach Bo Ryan.

Bracket Breakdown: East Regional

By: David Kay

Synopsis
With mid-majors New Mexico and Temple as two of the top five seeds, this regional looks a little weak.  Kentucky is the most talented team in the country with four future lottery picks on their roster but can they put it all together to make a tournament run?  #2 West Virginia is coming off a Big East Tournament title and is a serious contender to get to Indy while #4 Wisconsin is one of the best coached teams in the nation and if they get hot, can beat anybody.
