hawk-harrelson

(re-post from 5-7-12 as Hawk Harrelson now finishes his career and unjustifiably gets the “retirement bounce”)

Who’s the biggest dead weight connected to the Chicago White Sox: Gordon Beckham? Brent Morel?

How about Ken “Hawk”Harrelson who gave us 63 seconds of dead air Friday night on the game’s most pivotal play. Yes, over a minute of silence as the game’s critical home run unfolded. Obviously, it’s time HE GONE!

Former White Sox OF Andruw Jones arrested on Christmas for domestic violence

andruw-jones

When Andruw Jones was with the Chicago White Sox he gave the fans a couple thrills. Most notably, his 400th career home run. He played with four more MLB teams, including the Atlanta Braves for 12 years, for which he is best known. Jones won 10 Gold Gloves during his career.

But enough about that, it wasn’t a very merry Christmas in the Jones household, in fact it was a dysfunctional and violent one. He was arrested on domestic violence charges, assault and battery. Perhaps he should hang out with another former Sox slugger, and alleged wife-beater Wil Cordero?

Texas Rangers sign A.J. Pierzynski away from White Sox

a.j. pierzynski

The Chicago White Sox are hoping that Tyler Flowers hits better than .100 next season, because he’s the new full time catcher on the south side. A.J. Pierzynski is off to the Texas Rangers, for a one year deal, pending the physical. His remarkable eight-year run with the White Sox is now over. When Opening Day comes next April, Paul Konerko will be the last remaining player from the 2005 World Series team still with the White Sox.

Top 5 Chicago Sportscaster moments of 2012 (Video)

sarah-kustok

It was an extremely eventful year for Chicago sportscasters. Jim Deshaies replaced Bob Brenly in the booth for Cubs broadcasts after Brenly left to take the Arizona Diamondbacks job.

Sarah Kustok left Comcast Sports Net Chicago for Yes Network. She was replaced by Susanna Collins. White Sox colorman Hawk Harrelson continued to be an intolerable abomination to broadcasting.

What follows is a list of 5 memorable moments that involved all these tv personalities.

White Sox GM Rick Hahn discusses the club’s direction

rick-hahn

New White Sox General Manager Rick Hahn was very busy on Thursday. He did an interview on The Score, Chicago Tribune Live, and this conference call with us White Sox bloggers. It was all about getting the message out. He’s also been busy with transactions- re-signing Jake Peavy to a two year, $29 million dollar deal, and re-upping on Gavin Floyd.

I still question the Peavy move, with his injury history…anyways, Hahn has been very busy since taking over for Kenny Williams, one of the most successful GMs in Sox history. People are of course interested in the moves he hasn’t made yet- third base and catcher. And yes, those questions came up in conference call.

White Sox now tied wth Tigers for first place; stretch run looms

white sox logo

It took a sweep by the Detroit Tigers to knock the Chicago White Sox out of first place; and that’s exactly what happened. Justin Verlander won the highly anticipated match-up with Chris Sale, and the three game sweep restarts the AL Central race back at zero. Earlier in the season the Sox gave up first place to Detroit, but it was only for a day or two, as Chicago took it right back.

Told ya Jake Peavy gets all-star nod despite losing vote

Jake Peavy Chicago White Sox

Told ya all that All-Star campaigning crap was a waste of time. I told you that Chicago White Sox and their fans’ mindless jingoism and lemming behavior to vote Jake Peavy into the Midsummer classic was for naught- not because he finished second in the voting, but because I knew HE WOULD GET THERE ANYWAY. As an injury replacement.

And he did. This is the third All-Star nod for Peavy; first since 2007, first in the AL.

White Sox vs Cubs, Craig Robinson vs. Nick Offerman, The Office vs. Parks & Rec (video)

What follows is the the third installment of the New Era ballcaps ads featuring actors Nick Offerman and Craig Robinson sporting Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs caps. This one is the funniest by far; as it features Robinson in his Sox cap doing a lounge song version of “Take me out to the Ballgame.”

It’s a viral vid sure to spice up the latest edition of the Red Line Series which rekindles tonight at The Cell.

White Sox ace: Jake Peavy or Chris Sale?

Jake Peavy Chicago White Sox

I guess it’s safe to say that this year’s Chicago White Sox opening day starter, John Danks, is no longer considered the ace of the staff, what with his lackluster numbers juxtaposed against the dominating stats being put up by the youngster Chris Sale and the patched up veteran Jake Peavy. The former had a dominant, club record setting 14 Ks in one game while the latter is looking like his Cy Young days from when he wore a San Diego Padres uniform.

Hawk Harrelson’s EPIC anti-umpire rant today (video)

hawk-harrelson

You know what a ridiculous homer and quirky public speaker Chicago White Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson is (see here). That’s not news. And you know how much vitriol he has for the umpires- this isn’t a breaking development either. (See this Joe West rant)

But today, he truly out-did himself in both categories. What happened today versus the Tampa Bay Rays is one of the most entertaining moments of his career. And truly emblematic of who he is.

Here’s a written synopsis of the gist of the rant via Awful Announcing. And then the video itself. As you’ll see it was pretty intense:
