Oregon Ducks 62, USC Trojans 51: fun with the box score

hot-oregon-cheerleaders

It was a battle of high octane offenses and bad defenses (and the top 2 hottest cheerleading squads, look here to check out Oregon’s crew, go here for USC’s squad) Oregon Ducks 62, USC Trojans 51. 113 combined points as Oregon keeps their national title hopes alive. “Video game numbers” has become a cliche lately, but it applied to this college football game.

Here’s some highlights from the box score of this one.

#75 USC Trojans: College Basketball 111 in 111

usc cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

2011-2012 was a train wreck for the USC Trojans basketball program.  They were ravaged by injury, lost a school record 26 game, picked up just one victory in a weak Pac-12 conference, and finished second to last in Division One in scoring.  While Kevin O’Neill welcomes some key transfers to the team, he also loses a couple of valuable contributors from last year.

Notre Dame Football and Brian Kelly: How does this story end?

Notre Dame Stadium

Halfway through his second season at the pressure-packed helm of Notre Dame football, Brian Kelly has experienced horrible tragedy and made almost every mistake imaginable.

From the death of Declan Sullivan to horrible public admission that the players he recruited were on a different level than those he inherited, Kelly has done a lot in creating the minefield he has to navigate daily.

After finishing last season with a four-game winning streak and a lopsided bowl victory over one-time-rival Miami in the Sun Bowl, a lot was expected of the 2011 Fighting Irish.

Pac-12 Basketball Preview and Predictions

ucla hot cheerleaders

It’s still weird to write “Pac-12” but in the ever changing college sports landscape, the conference expanded with the additions of Colorado and Utah.  Those two schools won’t help the Pac-12 become a stronger conference during the 2011-2012 season, but the league should be slightly more competitive as a whole.

Here are my Pac-12 predictions for the 2011-2012 season.  Click on the school”s name for an in-depth breakdown of each team.

Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd: 3rd or 4th Best Pro Prospect at Receiver?

michael floyd

There are some that would say that Michael Floyd wasn’t even the best receiver on the field on the evening Notre Dame took on USC. And Floyd failed to even surpass the thirty yard mark against the Trojans; which gave the critics more ammunition. Of course, he made up for it yesterday with a 120+ yards receiving and a touchdown versus Navy. Yeah, it’s Navy, but we know what issues the Irish have had with them lately.

Floyd will surpass the thousand yard mark for the second consecutive season. His ability to block down the field to create big plays for others will be vital in the NFL. His size is also coveted by general managers at the next level. Some others deserve to be mentioned in the conversation, but none surpass him in terms of potential.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish 59, Air Force Falcons 33: Rapid Reaction

notre-dame_cheerleaders

Offense was the story in South Bend on Saturday, as Tommy Rees the “Game Manager” became Tommy Rees “the Touchdown slinger.”

Notre Dame reeled off 42 first half points thanks in large part to four passing touchdowns from their quarterback in route to a 59-33 shellacking of the Air Force Academy in a game that was not even as close as the already lopsided outcome would suggest.

Rees had trouble missing his targets as he connected on 23 of 32 passes for just under 300 yards and four touchdowns.

#30 USC Trojans: College Football 77 in 77

usc-song-girls-bikini

We are proud to reach a milestone here in the 77s- out first ever guest posting! Please welcome Amy Lamare from Gridiron Goddess. Ms. Lamare and I met at the Nike Football Media Summit in Dallas, and what follows is entirely written by her, so if/when you notice the “us” and “we” in reference to the team- that’s why. No Illini would ever do such a thing. Enjoy:

The USC Trojans, facing another year of sanctions, thanks to their unsuccessful NCAA appeal, won’t be looking to reinvent the wheel this season. That said, expect improvement from last year’s 8-5 squad (5-4 in the Pac-10) thanks to maturation from key players Matt Barkley and Robert Woods.

Offensively, the Trojans have every reason to improve on last year’s decent effort as the players have a full year of Lane Kiffin?s system under their belts. The biggest question comes on the O-Line and true freshman Cyrus Hobbi and Aundrey Walker will likely be tapped to make a big impression early on in their college football careers.

USC Trojans Once Again Loaded with NFL Draft Prospects

usc-song-girl

The USC Trojans have a long and illustrious history with the NFL Draft.  A cursory Google search reveals USC at the top or near the top on every list of Most NFL First Round Draft Picks by School.  They battle it out for that #1 position with a cast of usual suspect that includes Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, and Miami (FL).  Trojans are anxiously awaiting this week’s NFL draft to see where the players we’ve thrown our Trojan Spirit behind will end up.

2011 March Madness Predictions

bracket

It’s crunch time. The tournament is less than 24 hours away. By now you have gone through a dozen brackets, second guessing each pick. You want to choose the upset that no one is talking about, but your sleeper is becoming everyone’s sleeper. We see it every year; an upset pick that becomes so popular that it is no longer an upset, i.e. Richmond over Vanderbilt this year. At last, I’m here to give you six picks that no one is talking about, but should be, heading into the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Viva la Sun Bowl! Notre Dame vs Miami: Game preview

Only few would have properly predicted the location of the old west Texas town of El Paso for the reunion, but nonetheless, the famed Notre Dame/Miami rivalry reignites on New Year’s Eve near the Mexican border.

Bowl games are a great reward for the teams as the players and coaches get to enjoy a few days of activities and events leading up to the game, but once the ball is kicked, no one will care that Coach Kelly took the team shopping for new boots.

Yes, that did happen.

Both teams thought they were set at the quarterback position going into the season, but entering the bowl game, that is not the case for either squad.

Jacory Harris has been wildly inconsistent all season, and the injury to the Irish’s Dayne Crist has thrust untested Tommy Rees into more action his freshman year than anyone anticipated.
