Notre Dame QB derby: Andrew Hendrix, the other “favorite”

It’s a four way battle to start at quarterback in Notre Dame, perhaps the most high profile position in all of college sports. But after upon further inspection, it’s most likely a two way competition this college football season.

Last year’s starter Tommy Rees had the inside track to regain the position this year, but the charges he’s facing: underage drinking, resisting arrest and battery, means he’s likely fallen down the depth chart.

Discipline problems like these are hard to ignore, and that will open up the door for the more inexperienced signal callers.

Isn’t it time to get ‘experienced’ with Hendrix? Andrew Hendrix played some last year, throwing 18 of 37 for 247 yards, 1 TD, 2 picks. He also played in the Champs Sports Bowl loss to Florida State, going 3 of 8.  Is he the QB of the future?

Everett Golson is perhaps the QB of the future, and the future could be this fall.

Golson was the talk of the spring game, as he turned in the best performance of the four quarterbacks, going 11-for-15 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame’s Rees and Calabrese suspended for Ireland season opener

University of Notre Dame senior linebacker Carlo Calabrese and junior quarterback Tommy Rees have both been suspended for the opening game of the 2012 season, Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly announced today.

Notre Dame Football Season Wrap: Facts, Figures, Notes and Tidbits

Notre Dame ended the season with four consecutive wins, the first Irish team to do so since 1992 (that team finished its season with seven straight wins). They utterly routed a struggling Miami Hurricanes team with serious quarterback issues in a very chilly Sun Bowl game.

There are a ton of questions to be answered in the offseason, starting mostly with the health of the skill position guys and whether or not Kyle Rudolph and Michael Floyd return to school for their senior seasons.

We’ll delve into that later; for now let’s look at some of the more notable season-ending nuggets and tidbits.

Notes and Nuggets from Notre Dame’s Sun Bowl Blowout Victory

-Notre Dame’s 24-point halftime lead marked the second-largest in Sun Bowl history (Alabama led SMU 28-0 in 1983).

— Michael Floyd’s three-yard TD catch to start the scoring at 11:02 of the first period marked his 27th career TD reception, equaling Jeff Samardzija’s Notre Dame career mark.

— Michael Floyd’s reception on third down at the 11-minute mark gave him his fourth 100-yard receiving day of the season and 13th of his career (ties with Tom Gatewood for second in Notre Dame history).
