Wolverines Really Didn’t Deserve BCS Bowl Win, or Bid in the first Place

michigan-block-m

It was kind of ridiculous that both the ACC and the Big Ten got two BCS bids this year when each conference only deserved one. Of course, that’s nothing compared to #23 West Virginia getting an Orange Bowl bid when the Big East clearly didn’t deserve it’s automatic qualifier this year; or last year for that matter.

The Michigan Wolverines didn’t deserve to be in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl so it’s very fitting they won the game in the manner in which they did. UM defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 23-20 in OT despite being outgained by more than double (377-184). And they won the game on a field goal in which their kicker committed a false start, or at least an illegal motion penalty that was not called.

That was set up by Virginia Tech having a TD reception called back again, a very questionable call.

Jim Tressel Trades Reputation For Wins

Jim Tressel has plenty of accomplishments. He has a National Championship, he has 7 Big Ten titles, he has a winning percentage better than .800 and he’s got a 9-1 record against Michigan. Yet, with all of that under his belt, Tressel risked his job (maybe), his reputation (definitely) and the program’s future in order to lock up a couple wins during the 2010 campaign.

Yep, the Sweater Vest himself traded on his own pristine reputation to make a play at the 2010 National Title (failed) at the cost of potential program reparations in the years to come. The worst part about it is that he could have prevented it.

Sugar Bowl Sweetness: Big Ten Redemption, Ohio State Finally Beats SEC

jim tressel

U2 once told us “nothing changes on a New Year’s Day.” Not so this January one, as the Big Ten was absolutely slaughtered all around in the four college football bowl games they played that day. What hurt the most was the 0-3 “Big Ten/SEC Challenge” component of those four, as the face off between power conferences in one of the most crucial aspects of bowl season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes came in 0-9 all time vs. the SEC in bowl games, and it didn’t seem like they would help the Big Ten’s 2-5 record this bowl season.

But the tenth time was the charm as Ohio State improved 6-4 in BCS bowl games (more appearances than any other school) and 5-3 in BCS bowls under Jim Tressel.
