Southern Miss did something last year no one else in college football could do- beat Houston and Case Keenum. Although it ended up being more of a morale boost than anything else (despite a school record 12 wins they still ended up in the Hawaii Bowl), the Conference USA Championship game win was still very impressive, as it shut out UH from any remote chance of the BCS.

Such are the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, who are becoming one of the more important college football programs in C-USA. They are the alma mater of Brett Favre after all.

Championship Week: Mid-Major Mania

Where did a whole year go? I swear it was just last night that Kemba Walker led the youthful UConn Husky Puppies to a National Championship.

March always sneaks up on us, but this year seems different. Maybe it’s because I live in Wisconsin and we are just now starting to see snow.

I don’t know what it is, but I like it.

March marks the start of tournament time for college basketball, which means a decline in workplace productivity, an increased demand for paper, and attention-deprived significant others who “hate this time of year,” yet end up winning your pool after picking the correct national champion based on their favorite animal. Simply put, March is unparalleled by all 11 other months put together.

This guy would agree.

College Football 77 in 77: #50 Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Looking at the Southern Miss Golden Eagles roster, I see a couple familiar names in the coaching staff. Golden Eagles Head Coach Larry Fedora (that is a really fun name to say, it sounds like the absolutely coolest man alive would have that name) and Defensive Coordinator Dan Disch (a much less interesting name) were both assistants under Ron Zook at Illinois.

As an Illini, I have to ask what it feels like to escape from under the tremendous shadow cast by the Zooker coaching greatness. I mean since Zook is our generation’s Bear Bryant, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Knute Rockne and Bob Zuppke all rolled into one, (you’ve caught on to the sarcasm by now right?) it must have been easy for these two men to bask in the glory during their days in Champaign.
