Michigan State Needs to Fix Defensive Lapses to Become Elite

msu

This what #9 Michigan State has given up in scoring in their four losses: 67 to North Carolina, 74 to Duke, 81 to Northwestern, 6o to Michigan.

In their 16 wins, they’ve held everyone under 70 with the exception of Lehigh; a game they won 90-81. The losses to the Wolverines and Tar Heels were much more on the offense than the D, but the pattern is still obvious: when the Spartans play defense like a traditional Tom Izzo team is known to do, they are elite.

They look like an Elite Eight, Final Four team. But when they have those occasional defensive lapses, which have been few and far between, they look like an ordinary team.

Mich St Fans Get Repulsive; Draymond Tips Ball into Purdue Goal

Michigan State may have absolutely slaughtered Purdue 83-58 yesterday, but the battle between the two traditional Big Ten powers still had some embarrassing, and down-right dark moments in the lop-sided win.

Spartans leader (in scoring, rebounding and emotion) Draymond Green accidentally stuffed the ball home for Purdue (watch video after the jump). But much worse, the Izzone, the MSU student cheering section went really low and class-less in heckling Boilermakers star Robbie Hummel.

Purdue Boilermakers Owning State of Indiana Basketball Right Now

When Robbie Hummel went down with a season-ending injury in mid October, many college basketball pundits believed the Purdue Boilermakers’ dream season to be was lost. Their lofty top ten, in some cases top five, national ranking seemed no longer appropriate, and many experts wrote them off.

Yet here they are, the second most consistent and powerful team in the Big Ten. They’re ranked #14 in the national polls,19th in scoring margin, 24th in defense, 12th in turnover margin, 17th in assists, and 6th in assist to turnover ratio. And they have the conference’s leading scorer in JaJuan Johnson; who’s giving Jared Sullinger from Ohio State a run for his money for the conference MVP award.

And fresh off a demolishing of their hated rivals, the Indiana Hoosiers, the Boilers are by far the best basketball team in the state most rich in basketball tradition. As Butler, the Indiana Pacers and the Hoosiers struggle, Matt Painter’s team looks very strong.

Purdue’s Robbie Hummel OUT FOR SEASON

HUMMEL_INJURED

It appears that the curse bedeviling Purdue’s football team has now carried over to basketball. This is just ridiculous for the Boilermakers.

They lost their starting QB, tailback and the best WR in the Big Ten for the season. Now they lost their best and most important player in basketball, coincidentally a year after they lost him down the stretch of what could have been a very a special season. I turn to Twitter:

I cant believe this RT @BTNBrentsBlog:Purdues Robbie Hummel will miss the 2010-11 season after tearing his ACL on Saturday.

and later this tweet from the Purdue student section, which accurately sums it up:

ThePaintCrew F*** this, this is not fair

Agreed, it’s not fair. This is Hummel’s third major injury in four years, my heart bleeds for you guys.
