Flashback: Coyotes Raffi Torres hit on Blackhawks Hossa (video)

The Chicago Blackhawks Marian Hossa took a nasty illegal hit from the Phoenix CoyotesRaffi Torres in last year’s NHL playoffs. The brutal  that left him motionless on the ice. As you can see after the jump, Torres left his feet for the hit so he’s likely going to face a suspension. He’s a repeat offender, so he could face 10 games.

Brendan Shanahan suspended Torres before he paralyzes somebody. Tonight is the first rematch of the teams since the altercation.

While the Los Angeles Kings, and their millions of fans who just jumped on the bandwagon, celebrate the team’s first Stanley Cup championship, the other 29 teams in the league are gearing up for next season.  The top priority of these teams:  the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.  The draft takes place June 22 and 23 from Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA.  With the Edmonton Oilers winning the draft lottery, they will select the first pick for the third straight year, the first time since the Quebec Nordiques of 1989-91.  Who will the Oilers take? Cheap head shot in Coyotes-Stars game triggers massive melee (video)

A headshot like this will probably earn a suspension. Not thinking this is the type of behavior the NHL wants to condone in future hockey games.

At 5:54 in the second period Tuesday night, Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars took a nasty shot to the jaw from Phoenix Coyotes Capt. Shane Doan. Benn fell to the ice.

This sparked some brawling between the two teams and a whole ton of penalties.

Once an Afterthought, Ray Emery Shining As Blackhawks Keep Winning

Coming into the 2011-12 season, the Chicago Blackhawks seemed like they finally had a guy they could count on in net. They inked Corey Crawford to a three-year extension over the off-season, and the only question was whether Ray Emery or Alexander Salak would back up the talented youngster. As has happened in previous years with Cristobal Huet, Nikolai Khabibulin, Antti Niemi, and Marty Turco, however, the Hawks’ crease was not as solidified as previously thought.

UFL: On Its Last Legs, Sadly

 

The United Football League held its title game in Virginia Beach on Friday night in front of just over fourteen thousand faithful. This is just proof of Jerry Seinfeld’s assertion that fans simply cheer for laundry. The league provides a quality product at affordable prices in markets that should be starving for the new national pastime.

Jim Fassel is the head coach of the Las Vegas Locomotives and Marty Schottenheimer is the leader of the Virginia Beach Destroyers. The two men have accomplished momentous things in the NFL for long periods of time. They chose to hitch themselves to this fledgling situation rather than become coordinators or enter the college game because they correctly felt that the games would be played at a very high level.

Saturday’s Three Stars: Bruins Top Hawks in Cup Champs Bowl

The last two Stanley Cup champions met at the United Center on Saturday night, but it was Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins who had the last laugh as they beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout. Bryan Bickell and Patrick Kane scored goals for the Hawks, and Tim Thomas made 27 saves and stopped all three Chicago shootout attempts to grab the victory for the defending champs.

2011 MOCK NHL ENTRY DRAFT (Draft Day Edition)
