November 9, 2012 By paulmbanks

Earlier in  the season we gave a quarterly review of the performance of each Big Ten team and graded them based on how they did compared to pre-season expectations. About a month ago, we gave our mid-season review. Now, three-quarters of the season is over, and  each school’s grade is based on its overall/ conference record, and how the team has  improved or declined since  the … [Read more...] about Big Ten Football Third Quarter Review

Now, we have our mid-season review in which each school’s grade is based on its  overall/ conference record, and how the team has  improved or declined since  the first quarter of … [Read more...] about Big Ten Mid-Season Review

Northwestern sets school record for total offense

September 29, 2012 By paulmbanks

In their 44-29 victory over Indiana Saturday, Northwestern had an extremely balanced attack on offense: accruing 310 yards passing and 394 yards rushing (704 overall on 93 plays). The first and only 700 yard total offense day in school history just says so much about how a very bad Hoosier defense was just so over-matched all day. … [Read more...] about Northwestern sets school record for total offense

Believe it or not, the college football season is a quarter over, and we are only a week away from the kick-off of Big Ten conference play! With only three games played this season, it may seem a bit soon to be handing out letter grades, but these first three weeks can be very telling as to what may be in store for the rest of the season. Each team will receive a letter … [Read more...] about Big Ten Football Quarterly Review

Reviewing college football fan sites: Northwestern blogs

May 14, 2012 By paulmbanks

Modern media publications review movies, television shows and rock albums, but no one reviews blogs, the question is why? Obviously, it's easy to review static mass media items that aren't changing once they initially are produced much more easily than the dynamic and the evolving world of blogs. Of course, some aspects of certain blogs are pretty consistent, and with … [Read more...] about Reviewing college football fan sites: Northwestern blogs

Northwestern linebacker Chi Chi Ariguzo: good player, greater name

April 19, 2012 By paulmbanks

Northwestern's defense was much maligned last season. The pass defense was especially substandard. But at the conclusion of 2012 spring practice, the D was ahead of the offense and it showed a lot of improvement. The secondary will be retooled, so the defense figures to lean on the front seven this fall. And when you're coached by a linebacker in Pat Fitzgerald, the … [Read more...] about Northwestern linebacker Chi Chi Ariguzo: good player, greater name

Who might replace Bill Carmody at Northwestern?

March 17, 2012 By paulmbanks

There are financial advantages to letting Bill Carmody finish out his contract at Northwestern, as there won’t be a buyout. NU needs to put more money into its next coach and the program as a whole when that coach takes over. Even if Carmody makes the Big Dance next season, the school has to help him out by upgrading facilities and re-examining admission standards. Without a … [Read more...] about Who might replace Bill Carmody at Northwestern?

Should Northwestern give Bill Carmody another year?

March 17, 2012 By paulmbanks

Bill Carmody’s seat is warm. Warmer than he has ever felt it before and warmer than a seat typically gets for coaches at Northwestern. After yet another year in which his team failed to miss the NCAA Tournament, Carmody is taking heat. And he certainly deserves it. This year’s team underachieved. It failed in the clutch so many times throughout the season and couldn’t … [Read more...] about Should Northwestern give Bill Carmody another year?
