TOP NHL DEFENSEMAN FREE AGENTS

 

There is no real baseball being played right now, despite what Bud Selig wants us to think.  There is no action in the NBA or NFL with both locked out and barred from their sport.  The only real sport still rolling is the NHL.  With the free agency period a little more than a week and a half old, the top players of the class have been signed to the big contracts, the accompanying pieces have been signed, and we have a general sense of what every NHL team’s line ups come this fall.  It’s time to take a look at where  the top players signed  and what more to expect this NHL offseason.  To see who the top defenseman are and where they went, continue after the jump.

Chicago Businessmen And The Future Of The NHL

WEALTHY CHICAGO INVESTORS AND POTENTIAL NHL TEAM OWNERSHIP

Within the last couple weeks, wealthy Chicago area businessmen have been connected to different stories regarding potential ownership of an NHL franchise.  Matthew Hulsizer, CEO of Chicago-based Peak6 Investments LP, has been involved in talks about the Phoenix Coyotes for more than a year.  Don Levin, owner of the AHL Chicago Wolves, is possibly developing a NHL caliber arena in a new, untapped professional hockey market.  To find out how all this Chicago money could impact the NHL, continue after the jump.

2011 NHL ENTRY DRAFT RECAP

 

The dust has settled on the floor of the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, as the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has completed.  The hometown Minnesota Wild made the first big splash at the draft, trading Brent Burns to the San Jose Sharks.  The rest of the NHL Entry Draft weekend saw more trades, a lot of picks, and the loud and celebrated return of the Winnipeg Jets.  To find out everything that went down at the center of the universe, the winners and losers, continue on after the jump.

Atlanta Thrashers Sale Completed To Winnipeg Group

True North Sports Officially Buys Thrashers, Will Move Team To Winnipeg

 

After two weeks of constant rumors and reports that a deal had been completed, the NHL, True North Sports, and Atlanta Spirit Group have announced that the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers is complete, and that True North Sports will move the team to Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season.  The cost of the deal is rumored to be $110 million for the team and a $60 million relocation fee that is paid to the NHL.  Atlanta will lose its second NHL franchise in the last thirty years.  The NHL will be back in Winnipeg for the first time since the 1996-97 season.  The sale and relocation are all dependent on a vote by the NHL Board of Governors on June 21.

Possible NHL Division Realignment

 

NHL Division Realignment

With the potential sale of the Atlanta Thrashers, and possible relocation of the team to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,the NHL is looking at the potential need to realign a few teams into new divisions.  While the rumors are out there for a simple realignment plan, with only one team switching conferences besides the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, my brain got to thinking of how the league should properly segment itself.  Find out how the league wants the league to look, and what restructuring I think would benefit hockey the most, after the jump.
